    Lot 61

    1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 'Flat Floor' Coupe

The subject of a comprehensive restoration and just 520 miles since completion

    Registration - 981 UYX

    Chassis No. - 885429

    M.O.T. - Exempt

    Odometer - 520

Let’s not beat about the bush, this 3.8-litre coupe and the accompanying 4.2-litre roadster [1E16546] entered from the same private collection, are the best E-Types it has ever been our pleasure to handle. Impeccably-presented in Opalescent Dark Blue, ‘981 UYX’ would seem to be just about perfect in every respect. One of the last of the sought after ‘flat floor’ cars, it came off line at Browns Lane on January 4, 1962. Twenty days later it was despatched to Olmette Motors of Greensburgh, Pennsylvania, who had the honour of delivering the Jaguar to its first keeper, a C E Cuplier. At this time it was finished in cream, trimmed in dark blue and featured lefthand drive. Scroll forward 60 years and it was handpicked by the vendor as the ideal basis for his long desired E-Type coupe, and so duly underwent a professional 10-year nut and bolt restoration, since when it has travelled less than 1,000 miles. The stunning exterior is matched to black hide interior trim and black carpets that contrast perfectly with the period correct alloy faced console and dashboard centre panel, plus the elegant toggle switches for which the 3.8-litre cars are also famed. This wonderful matching numbers specimen is now being offered for sale complete with period push-button radio, V5C, import documentation, Heritage Certificate and numerous photos and other documentation relating to the peerless restoration. It is also accompanied by a professionally produced booklet that covers the full story behind the car, and is transformation from a tired lefthand drive example to righthand drive potential show winner. What more can you say?!

The unveiling of the E-Type ahead of the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, is the stuff of legend. Six decades later, all examples are desirable, but it is the early flat-floored versions that are the most sought after, only 2,615 of which were made. To own one like the sale car, ie in as-new condition, is the dream of many an enthusiast, for whom reality now beckons.

    In summary:

Desirable ‘flat floor’ example – one of just 2,615 made

Less than 1,000 miles since being totally restored

Presented in stunning condition inside and out

Sold by the Classic and Sportscar Centre of Malton in September 2025. Abbreviated seller's description below.

    www.classicandsportscar.ltd.uk/jaguar-e-type-series-one-3.8-fhc/classic-cars-sol ...

This first class, fully rebuilt matching numbers flat floor E Type Series 1 3.8 FHC was built on 4 January 1962 and dispatched to Jaguar Cars, New York. It was supplied new to C E Cuplier by Olmette Motors, Greenburg, Pennsylvania. By 1987 it was in Florida and 10 years later in tired, original condition it came back to the UK. Sourced by restorers D and M Wilson of Castleford for its most recent owner it was then subject to a full nut and bolt restoration that was completed in early 2018. The shell was taken back to bare metal and rebuilt to show standard. The original engine was rebuilt, the gearbox stripped and found to be in excellent order, and all mechanical components were replaced or overhauled, with stainless steel fixings used throughout.

On completion it was taken to a specialist for valuation who valued the car at £180,000. Since restoration the car has covered just 700 miles. The bodywork is first class with excellent gaps, and it has been painted beautifully inside and out. The chrome work is beautiful and all trims and rubbers are new. The retrim is to a high standard and the engine bay exceptional. The car drives superbly, with excellent oil pressure, the Moss gearbox is lovely to use and with the rebuilt mechanicals the car feels tight and superbly put together. With upgrades to the brakes and an aluminium radiator it is very usable. It has been fitted with new tyres. This is a special car, truly exceptional.
