I used to own this car many years ago, approx 1976-1980.
It was a red DHC with black trim and a white top. Reg No was 80 XKE. I think it was originally white. It was not in particularly good condition. I have some old photos if the car is still around and the owner is interested.

Further information to my previous post. I have a copy of the UK Registration Document from 1978. The car was registered on 22 Jan 1962. The document shows the engine and body numbers above. I purchased the car for £1900 on 3 March 1978 from Mr Hobbs in Essex U.K. I still have the receipt. I sold it to Mr Austin in Luton U.K..

Sellers description:
The Holy Grail. A stunning, ultra-rare Series 1 3.8 "flat floor" Roadster presented in fabulous deep blue metallic paint-work with light tan hide interior. Numbers-matching and the subject of extensive restoration over many years, it is a glorious car in all respects.
Our car most probably left the production line in late 1961 and was supplied new by Henlys of London to a gentleman in Hertfordshire on the 22nd January 1962. A Jaguar Cars build certificate confirms that chassis no. 850342 was originally supplied in Cream with Dark Blue Hide with Dark Blue soft-top. The change of colour to it's current blue metallic is not documented but interestingly the original buff log-book records that over a period of some years (1970`s) the car wore several shades of paint including black, white and red. Not all at the same time we assume! Certainly through this period it saw a number of keepers and we have many sundry bills and old MOT Certificates as well as a letter from one of the owners documenting a fairly extensive body-work rebuild and interior re-trim between 1973-76. By 1980, the car had clocked up just over 100,000 miles and there the paper-trail sadly disappears. We understand that shortly afterwards it went into covered storage and for at least 15 years lay "sleeping" before being sold as a "barn find" in July 2000 by a highly-regarded London auction house. Purchased by an enthusiastic collector, the car was transported to a Jaguar specialist in South Yorkshire where it was mechanically rebuilt incorporating some sensible period upgrades to include a 5 Speed Getrag gearbox and prop-shaft, alternator conversion and electronic ignition. Thereafter, the car was shipped South and a further full body restoration was undertaken and finished-off in the dark blue metallic seen today. Over the past few years, the Jaguar has been enjoyed sparingly only going out on dry days and from the documentation provided has covered less than 1,000 miles in the past 11 years.
With excellent panel-fit, virtually blemish-free paint and fabulous chrome, it is a joy to behold. The type of car that wouldn't look out of place parked-up in the sitting room as on the front driveway! It has a wonderful patina throughout with just very slight wear to the off-side bolster of the driver's seat being the only point of note within what is otherwise a fabulous and largely original cabin. Mechanically, it is "on the button" starting first push every time and settling quickly into a quiet 6-cylinder tick-over. On the road, power delivery is instantaneous and motorway cruising speeds are reached effortlessly. Easy gear changes and reassuringly good brakes make driving a real pleasure. It is surprisingly easy to drive and with period road test reports documenting 149mph and the dash to 60 in around 7 seconds, this is very much the stuff of supercar territory albeit in a 50-year old package.
The car comes with a file of early history including the buff log-book and continuation book, original supplying dealer information, some build-sheets, sundry bills and old MOT Certificates as well as a current one to October 2012. We also have later invoices for mechanical work from the period 2000-2002 and service and maintenance bills to date.
A very rare and desirable car.

Lot 158 - 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Flat Floor
Estimate: £60,000 - £70,000
Registration Number: 80 XKE
Chassis Number: 850342
This 1961 car was supplied new by Henly's of London to a gentleman in Hertfordshire on the 22nd January 1962, and there are many bills and old MOT Certificates, as well as a letter from one of the owners during the 1970s documenting an extensive bodywork refurbishment and interior re-trim between 1973-76.
We understand that shortly afterwards it went into covered storage in around 1980 and for at least 15 years lay "sleeping" before being sold as a "barn find" in July 2000; the car was moved to a Jaguar specialist in South Yorkshire where it was mechanically rebuilt, incorporating some sensible period upgrades to include a 5 Speed Getrag gearbox and prop-shaft, alternator conversion and electronic ignition.
The car was then shipped south and a further full body restoration was undertaken and finished in the Jaguar Sapphire blue metallic seen on the coachwork today. Over the past few years, the Jaguar has been enjoyed only sparingly, used almost exclousively on dry days, and from the documentation provided has covered less than 1,000 miles in the past 11 years.
Mechanically, according to the present owner the car is ready to be driven and responds well.
There is a file of early history including the buff log-book and continuation book, original supplying dealer information, some build-sheets, sundry bills and old MOT Certificates as well as a current MOT to October 2012.
There are some later invoices for mechanical work from the period 2000-2002, and some recent service and maintenance bills too.
An excellent example of a rare car, in very pleasing order.

it"s not a flat floor model, too late in production..... I think the engine has been replaced can anyone confirm??

You are incorrect about the car being too late in production to be a flat floor. Jag were producing flat floors well into 1962

For sale at The Elms Collection near Chelmsford for £185,000. Seller's description below. The URL is www.elmscollection.com/vehicles/1962-jaguar-e-type-roadster-86
This original early right hand drive, UK supplied roadster was delivered new by Henlys of London on 22 January 1962 to William Alderton of Hertfordshire, has subsequently had just four owners and is at the time of print one of only twelve 1962 cars that have survived. It comes complete with a fantastic 4 inch thick history file which includes the original buff log book and heritage certificate.
It has the most detailed and thorough description and dated itemisation of the restoration that was carried out from 2001 to 2003. During this period the car benefited from some serviceable upgrades including Coopercraft brakes, Getag 5 speed gearbox (original specification gearbox included with the car) and 6.5 inch wire wheels. During this restoration the car was repainted in Metallic Dark Blue and the interior was completely re-trimmed in Tan leather to a high standard, presents extremely well and features a Motorlita steering wheel. The roof was also replaced at this time.
The car has resided in a major private collection until recently and has been fully serviced and inspected prior to arriving with us here now, the car drives exceptionally well and the uprated gearbox and brakes make this an ideal example for European trips and regular usage. To add to this, the car has been fitted with the desirable, later 'heel wells', many E Types were fitted with this modification during this period and it makes the cabin much more spacious and comfortable again adding to the usability of this particular example.
An inspection report by CKL Developments is also present in the documentation, this E Type is ready to be used and enjoyed by the next owner.
