Driver’s Side RHD
Highly desirable specification: UK-supplied RHD OTS with manual transmission, factory hard top and an attractive colour scheme. 1 former registered keeper and believed to have covered only ~41,000 miles from new.
The current registered keeper, prior to our trade ownership, purchased the vehicle in 2001 and thoroughly enjoyed it for many years, using it for shows and even completing a parade lap around the Goodwood circuit.
Around 2011, a newfound passion for golf meant his two classic cars - this E-Type and, coincidentally, a fellow 1973 yellow Lotus Elan Sprint DHC - gradually fell out of use and were subsequently stored in his heated garage.
A brief conversation with his wife suggested that finally parting with his ‘babies’ was necessary, although not an easy decision; which perhaps gives some indication of how fondly the cars were regarded during his ownership
Market Auction
Danny, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.
History Checked
History check actioned using HPi, the industry’s top verification service, for finance, write-offs, and stolen records.
Exterior
Finished in attractive Pale Primrose Yellow with black trim, this UK RHD Series 3 OTS has superb road presence, complemented by its factory hard top.
Wheels and Tyres
The car sits on its attractive steel wheels with chrome embellishers and hub caps, which suit the E-Type particularly well and complement the brightwork nicely.
The matching set of Michelin tyres were fitted new before the vehicle was laid up. They appear serviceable visually, although their age and condition should be checked before road use.
Bodywork
The bodywork presents well overall from a distance, and the car has strong visual appeal; particularly in its attractive Pale Primrose Yellow.
As you would expect from an older classic that has spent many years in storage, there are areas that would benefit from attention. The paintwork shows microblistering in places, along with various age-related marks and imperfections, and there are a few areas of visible corrosion. The brightwork also shows some pitting.
With that being said, the car remains very presentable at first glance and retains a pleasing, honest appearance rather than looking excessively restored.
Paint
The car appears very presentable at first glance and retains a pleasing, honest appearance rather than looking excessively restored. The paintwork shows microblistering in places, along with various age-related marks and imperfections.
Glass and Trim
The glass presents well for the age of the vehicle.
The chrome presents reasonably well overall, although there is some pitting and age-related deterioration in places.
The convertible roof appears to be in good condition, with no obvious rips or tears noted.
Interior
The classic black interior complements the Pale Primrose Yellow exterior beautifully, retaining a purposeful and largely original-feeling appearance. It presents well overall for its age, with only the expected areas of wear and use.
The seats largely present well, with the most noticeable fault being a split to the driver’s seat base. There is also some wear to the upper corners of both seats, likely caused by the roof rubbing against them if the seats are not folded forward before opening or closing it.
The carpets generally present well, although the driver’s side carpet could be improved as it is loose and torn in places.
The dashboard appears nice with no immediately obvious issues.
The iconic leather-rimmed steering wheel, complete with its Jaguar motif, sits proudly front and centre in front of the driver. It is a little faded with age but remains perfectly usable.
Likewise, the distinctive almost snooker-ball-style gear knob feels fantastic in the hand and adds to the wonderfully period driving environment.
Mechanics
Powered by Jaguar’s legendary 5.3-litre V12 and paired with the desirable original manual transmission, this E-Type offers a wonderfully evocative mechanical package. It starts, moves, and stops, making it an exciting re-commissioning opportunity.
The 5.3-litre V12 engine starts readily and appears to run well, although after a lengthy period in storage we would recommend a thorough re-commissioning before regular road use. There is also some evidence of oil leakage, which has not been further investigated.
The original manual gearbox selects its gears and the car moves under its own power, although there is some prominent clutch judder which will require attention.
Suspension and Brakes
The suspension appears to function as expected during our limited movement of the vehicle, we didn't notice any rattles or creaks, although given the length of time it has been in storage, a full inspection and re-commissioning would be advisable before road use.
The brakes appear to operate well and bring the car to a stop, but they should likewise be thoroughly checked and serviced as part of the re-commissioning process.
Electrics and Other
The electrics appear to function generally as expected during our limited checks, although after such a lengthy period in storage we would recommend that all electrical systems are inspected as part of the re-commissioning process.
The gauges, switches, and controls present well overall and retain the wonderfully period feel of the Series 3 E-Type. As with any classic of this age, prospective buyers should expect that some minor electrical items may require attention once the car is returned to regular use.
