Lot 50 at the Dorotheum Sale of Classic Cars in Salzburg on 19th October 2019. Sold for 82,800 euros. Amended catalogue description below.

This E Type is finished in Opalescent Silver Grey. It has the steering wheel on the right side for us and was originally exported to the United States. Believed to have been restored around 20 years ago, it moved to Austria shortly after work was completed. The seller acquired this E Type in 2013 and brought it to Germany. This coupe became part of an exclusive collection and was used for regular and extensive touring. The ca is fitted with its original engine with 9:1 compression.

It is easy to recognise that the restoration was extensive and without regard to cost. It has had a new fuel tank and complete brakes and carburettor rebuild. A recent German inspection confirmed that the car is in excellent working order. The Series 1 3.8 litre coupe is simply stunning in appearance, it has to be an E Type.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
