This 1962 Jaguar XKE roadster was built on September 14, 1961 and left the factory finished in black over beige upholstery with a black top. The car is an early Series I example with a flat floor and welded louvers, and it was purchased by its original owner in late 1961 through Satori Inc. of Glendale, California. The original owner reportedly gifted this car to one of his employees as a bonus in the 1960s, and the vehicle remained under that person’s care in California and Nevada until 2018. Power comes from a numbers-matching 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Modifications include an aluminum radiator and a Moto-Lita steering wheel. In early 2019 this car received more than $19k in mechanical and cosmetic work as described below. This XKE is now offered by the selling dealer with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, owner’s manuals and supplements, factory tools and accessories, an extra steering wheel, and a clean Texas title.
According to the seller, this XKE received a repaint in its original black many years ago, as showcased in the photo gallery below. Triplex glass and factory trim are also pictured along with known cosmetic blemishes. The previous owner of 50+ years was a former Marine and applied a badge to the right of the rear license plate along with aeronautical stickers on the lower corners of the windshield. The car was kept in the Hollywood hills until 2011 when the previous owner retired and moved to Nevada. In 2019 Jeff’s Resurrections in Taylor, Texas fixed dents in the hood and repainted it, installed a new black canvas top with a tan headliner and black boot cover, and replaced the door and trunk seals.
Jeff’s Resurrections also mounted five new period-correct Avon 6.40-15 tires on the chrome knock-off wire wheels, including the trunk-mounted spare assembly. A factory tool kit, jack, Eureka copper hammer, and wheel wrench accompany the sale and are shown in the gallery.
The 2019 interior refresh included new leather upholstery, vinyl trim, Hardura trim, underfelt, and Wilton wool carpeting as well as replacement of some chrome and aluminum console components and fitment of black Coco mats atop a set of wool mats. The Blaupunkt Frankfurt Z radio has been refurbished with Bluetooth capability and connected to new speakers. Note that this XKE retains its factory positive-ground electrical system.
A 15″ mahogany Moto-Lita steering wheel is currently equipped, and the removed factory riveted wheel is also included, as shown in the gallery. The five-digit odometer shows just over 84k miles.
Under the front-hinged hood is a triple-carbureted 3.8-liter inline-six sending power rearward through a four-speed manual gearbox. Electric fans and a modern aluminum radiator have been added. In 2019, Jeff’s Resurrections installed several engine-compartment pieces as well as a new exhaust system and associated hardware including porcelain-coated headers and stainless-steel piping. They also tuned the carburetors. The seller has since replaced some brake and clutch hydraulic components. A selection of records and parts receipts from 2019 are posted in the gallery and total more than $19k. The cylinder head and the engine block both show #R1748-9, which matches the Heritage Trust certificate below as being original to this car.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate verifies that this car was originally finished in black over beige upholstery with a black top. It was built on September 14, 1961 and was dispatched for New York on October 2. Serial numbers for the chassis, engine, body, and gearbox are also listed.

Sold For $214,500
RM | Online Only - DRIVING INTO SUMMER 21 - 29 MAY 2020
Chassis No. 875534
Engine No.R 1748-9
This matching-numbers example of Jaguar’s celebrated E-Type benefits from 50 years of ownership by a single dedicated Southwest-based caretaker, and a recent freshening by one of the nation’s foremost marque specialists. The beautiful roadster is notably one of the early examples featuring flat floors and welded louvers, which have arguably evolved into the most collectible and desirable of the Series 1 E-Types.
As confirmed by a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, chassis no. 875534 was originally finished in black and trimmed with a beige interior and black soft top. After completing assembly in mid September 1961, the Jaguar was dispatched to the US early the following month and retailed by Peter Satori’s distributorship in Glendale, California. It was sold by Satori dealer representative Gene A. Pinckney to a successful entrepreneur Allen V.C. Davis of La Canada, California on 22 November 1961. The Jaguar retains its Manufacturer’s Warranty certificate along with Mr. Pinckney’s business card. The car was fastidiously maintained in its early ownership, as evident in the number of filled out service stamps in the book. By the mid to late 1960s Mr. Davis decided to part ways with the car.
Bruce Carpenter, who managed a business for Mr. Davis, was given the choice a cash bonus or the Jaguar. Bruce chose the Jaguar and the car would remain under his ownership until 2018. A former Marine and accomplished pilot, Mr. Carpenter affixed military and aeronautical decals throughout the car. He even gave the car a name, the “Black Mariah,” after the song “They Call the Wind Mariah.” Mr. Carpenter would go on to credit the Jaguar for impressing a special first date, which later became his wife. Under Mr. Carpenter’s ownership, the E-Type resided in a garage in the Hollywood Hills, exercised regularly with short drives through Griffith Park. Following a retirement move to Nevada in 2011, Mr. Carpenter continued the tradition of Saturday morning drives to Cars & Coffee gathering to meet with friends.
In 2018, the Jaguar was acquired by the consignor, commissioning the specialists at Jeff’s Resurrections in Taylor, Texas, to conduct over $19,000 worth of freshening measures, as illustrated by invoices on file. This work included tuning the carburetors and installing porcelain-coated headers, stainless steel lines, and a new exhaust system. The hood was refinished, and the interior was reupholstered with new beige leather, vinyl and Hardura trim, and Wilton wool carpeting. A Blaupunkt Frankfurt Z radio and new speakers were installed (wired with Bluetooth capability), and black Coco mats were added. A new black canvas top and complementary black boot were fitted, and period-correct Avon tires were mounted on the chrome wire wheels. After this work, the clutch and brake hydraulics were further addressed.
Claiming a life of meticulous care within the preservative climes of the arid Southwestern United States, this beautifully presented E-Type is accompanied by its original warranty certificate, owner’s manuals and service books with pouch, toolkit, JDHT certificate, as well as file of invoices and receipts. The roadster is currently fitted with a 15-inch mahogany Moto-Lita steering wheel, although the original factory wheel is included.
Ideal for event use and presentation at marque concours, this wonderful E-Type is a highly authentic example of the early cars with flat-floors and welded louvers, offering a fantastic addition to any sporting collection.

Recently bought that bonnet (see detailed pics of crashed bonnet) which never was apart, never was painted, never was fettled....
All screws are original so is the paint, etc.
Having said that, the car it belongs to was black and the body no stamped into the strengthening metal is 1611. As the sugar scoops are painted black (for early cars), 1611 cannot be a FHC.
So presumingly 875534. But if so, the story of an original unmolested car won't fit....

Certainly, the E-Type Jaguar looks great from any angle but, when finished in classic gleaming black, the animated lines of this famous car literally come to life. A well-known Jaguar with history that dates back to new, this example was first purchased by businessman Allen V.C. Davis of La Candida, California, on November 22nd, 1961, at Peter Satori's distributorship in Glendale, California. Mr. Davis would give this Jag to one of his top employees, Mr. Bruce Carpenter, as a bonus in the mid '60s. Quite the raise, indeed. A former Marine and pilot, this example stayed under his ownership until 2018. Documented by its JDHT Certificate, this early flat floor welded louver example retains its original numbers-matching engine and wears the same black over beige configuration it did when it left the Coventry factory. Mr. Carpenter was an excellent caretaker of this Jaguar.
In 2018, this example was acquired by a collector who would commission our good friends and Jaguar specialists, Jeff's Resurrections in Taylor, Texas, to conduct a freshening to the tune of over $19,000 in 2019. The work consisted of repainting the hood, installing a new black canvas top with a beige headliner and black boot cover, replacing the door and trunk seals, new leather upholstery in the cabin, as well as new Wilton wool carpeting. Jeff would also mount five new period-correct Avon tires on the chrome knock-off wire wheels. Other interior appointments included refurbishing the Blaupunkt Frankfurt Z radio and adding Bluetooth capability and new speakers.
Under the hood, Jeff's Resurrections performed work as well, which included tuning the carburetors, installing a stainless-steel line, a new exhaust system and porcelain-coated headers. Mechanically the original numbers-matching 3.8-litre inline-six and four-speed manual gearbox perform wonderfully. Further elevating its drivability, an electric fan and modern aluminum radiator were added.
Along with this Jag is the original manufacturer's warranty, owner's manual, Jaguar periodic maintenance vouchers, which documents its early service visits, factory tools, and an array of invoices from work performed through the years. An early flat floor, welded louver configuration with a verified numbers-matching engine and original factory color, this black beauty checks all the right boxes.
