850018 was one of the seven ZP537/24 cars. It was originally delivered to the Equipe Endeavour team. Reports indicated the car had been restored in the late eighties or early nineties.

Car was mentioned in Nov '06 Jaguar Journal. Having factory records stating it was built for Tommy Sopwith, color was Indigo Blue. Registration EE 400, engine R1029.

This car featured in an article in Thoroughbred and Classic Car magazine, England, in August 1992.
It was originally prepared for racing by Equipe Endeavour and was road registered EE 400 plate.

This car, chassis number 18, was purchased direct from Lofty England by Equipe Endeavour - run by Mr Tommy Sopwith – and originally carried his cherished registration mark EE 400. At the same time, Mr Sopwith also acquired the sister car, which was registered ECD 400 (that car became the first ever E-Type to win a race, driven by Graham Hill in May 1961 at Oulton Park). This car was the “spare” car to that race effort and used as personal road transport for the team’s main driver – Mike Parkes. There is a letter on file with the history of this car confirming all these details from Mr Sopwith. What is truly remarkable is that this car escaped the fate and possible ruin of so many very early E-Types and that she remains today totally original to that specification of May 1961. This is a truly significant E-Type. It has featured in articles in several Jaguar enthusiast magazines accrued over the years and is a car that has not been brought to the market during the last decade. For sale in october 2009 by Nick Whale Sports Cars Direct

I purchased this car from Nick Whale. It was poorly restored some time ago using I suspect Robey non -original panels. Has therefore lost some of its originality and rivets replaced by poor welding.I intend to strip down to bare shell and start again so need some pictures showing very early detailing and where to re-introduce rivets etc.new floors, cills etc and tunnell not welded in properly.Still appears to have original bonnett (hood). No hardtop fitting brackets, original boot lid and hinges, windscreen, dash, doors(but window vertical glass supports fitted),original fan, C/r gearbox etc etc. Any help with detailing would be appreciated and emil contact attached.CAR WILL BE USED FOR COMPETITION IN UK AND EUROPE AND WILL RUN IN ORIGINAL 1961 TRIM. IT WILL NOT BE TURNED INTO A LIGHTWEIGHT LOOK A LIKE.

A truly fantastic restoration by highly respected 'E' type UK using restored period second hand parts rather than reproduction new ones. The car has been invited to race at the Goodwood Revival in 2011 alongside at least 5 genuine lightweight's and 2 other ZP cars. It will race with a soft top rather than a hardtop just as it appeared in April 1961 when the hardtop had not been conceived. Can't wait to see it there.

Seen at Goodwood Revival 17th September 2011.Restored to its ORIGINAL specification and re-united with its original registration UPM400.Thankfully not a Lightweight copy. It raced in the Fordwater Trophy and went on to win the 'Cars for the Connoisseur' award for the best period cometition car. A fantastic presentation by the organisers as it was presented along side its sister car ECD400 in the 'E' Type display. The first time these two 'Equipe Endeavour Team' cars have appeared together since 1961.Driven to and from the meeting as cars were in the early 1960's.

The CR gearbox fitted to this car for the 62 season is owned by Tim Snowden in Harrogate Yorkshire, I have seen it at Tims garage. Tim’s Bros. Mark operates www.NorthernJaguar.com the Jaguar E-type and XK parts and car sales shop. Originally fitted to 850005 - ECD400 this CR gearbox went into 850018 - EE400 in 62 When Sopwith was racing this for the 62 season. It later came out of 850018 and is now in Tim’s garage. It's all documented in UPM400’s history file. Would be nice to re-unite them.

    Auction description:

The Classic Sale at Silverstone Festival 2023

1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster 'Project ZP' Ex-Tommy Sopwith Equipe Endeavour

    Lot Number: 660

    Saturday 26th August | 12.00pm BST

Chassis #18; one of the seven ZP537/24 original factory competition Jaguar E-Types that kept Jaguar Racing alive in 1961.

On 19th March 1961, Claude Bailey issued instructions to the Production Department to build seven competition E-Types and the project's issue number was ZP537/24. Sir William Lyons, 'Lofty' England and Bill Heynes, amongst others, were copied in, and seven cars were prepared and discreetly tuned prior to despatch to the selected 1960s racing dynasties. The modifications were relatively mild and included an increased compression ratio, polished con-rods, gas-flowed cylinder head, lightened flywheel and a close-ratio gearbox. Two cars each were destined for John Coombs, Tommy Sopwith’s Equipe Endeavour, Peter Berry and a single car to Sir Gawaine Ballie. We are delighted to have been asked to handle the sale of #850018, one of the most sought after Jaguar E-Types in the World. It was initially used by 'Lofty' England as his personal car, however there was a waiting list of about ten names for every car that came off the production line, so he didn't get to keep it long before it was one of the two cars sent to Tommy Sopwith’s Equipe Endeavour racing team. Originally founded by Tommy Sopwith to race in sports cars, Equipe Endeavour entered cars in the very first year of the BSCC in 1958. Running two Jaguar 3.4-litre saloons for Sopwith and Gawaine Baillie, the team created history by taking victory in the first ever BSCC race, with Sopwith and Baillie taking victory in every race (in their class) throughout the year. Sopwith only lost the title after a head-to-head duel with Jack Sears.

Lionel Abbott, who sourced the car for Silverstone Auctions, comments: 'I’ve known the car for 20-years. This fabled car, #850018, is one of four from the original seven that has remained in its original configuration. As the Equipe Endeavour paddock car, it was twice raced by Jack Sears in 1961. Its sister car, #850005, famously won its first race at Oulton Park in May 1961, driven by Graham Hill.'
