My uncle had this car new,he was a fiend of Mr. Lions, they both had a property near Salcombe in Devon. My Uncle Jack also had an early Xk 120 and a 140, I still have some of the original purchase invoices.The etype was definately not red as above and not this reg. number, it is white,and has not been on the road since early to mid seventies.

Some more history about Uncle Jack ,I recall him attending big Boxing events with Mr. Lyons ,I guess this friendship enabled him to have some very interesting cars,I also remember driving the white roadster down to Salcombe,which was his holiday home, Bolt Head South sands .I wish that I had taken more interest,I could also woffle on about uncle jack and his cars.

Reg.# is wrong (it's that of Phil Porter's 850012).
E-Type register shows RL 26, raced by well known Jack Lambert in the early 60s (several good results in GT and sportscar categories incl. 1st place at Silverstone in Jul'61 and Mallory Park in Sep'61). Looks like Peter's uncle Jack . . .

The historic car on display was the 11th Jaguar E-Type car made, chassis number 850011 and will be one of the many contesting the two HSCC Jaguar E-Type Challenge races at the Silverstone Classic in July. These early pre-production cars were sold to selected customers who would race them, gaining valuable promotion. This car went to George Wicken, a successful Formula 2 driver who raced it throughout 1961 against the likes of Graham Hill, Roy Salvadori and Bruce McLaren and was one of only two E-Types entered for the 1961 TT at Goodwood. It now competes successfully in historic racing driven by owner Gary Pearson.

Wicken car was initially LHD , possibly # 875011. It was registered in May 61,long before Jaguar released 850011.

Lofty, the Wicken car cannot have been 875011. It went straight to North America, as did all other LHD open cars at the time I'm pretty sure

Just found this site. I worked for Sir William Lyons at his house “The Bolt” South Sands Salcombe until he sold it to John Yeoman. Sir William supplied me with a BSA Bantam to get to work and later on he then supplied me a Mini estate. When he sold The Bolt he tried to persuade me to go to Wappenbury Hall and live in the thatched cottage as his head gardener , but I couldn’t leave my beautiful Salcombe.I continued working at The Bolt for John Yeoman for many many years.
I knew Jack and Gladys Brett also as they had Terifa Lodge near The Bolt at South Sands. Jack had a wonderful XK roadster and then he had this car and I thought it was the new XK but he told me this is the very special new Etype . We always referred to him as “Jack the Lad” in seventh heaven as all 7’s in his number. His journey to and fro to Kings Arms in Salcombe were adventures. Marvellous times in a fantastic place .
