Coys auction, 5/9/1999, London, England, lot #25. Sports Car Market report reads:
"RHD. Early competition E-type factory built for Peter Berry, raced by Bruce McLaren and David Hobbs. Restored in '88 to mid-'60s configuration, very clean, presentable and track ready with some later Lightweight E-type parts."

850010 was one of the seven ZP537/24 cars. It was advertised in the August 1986 Classic acid Sportscal., and been raced by David Hobbs and It reportedly had an extensive racing history, and to have been raced by David Hobs and Bruce Mc Laren. It was said to have been configured in semi-lightweight specification, and to have completed in June 1986 Brands Hatch Historic GT race, where was driven by Bobbie Bell and had pole position. It was offered for sale again in the January 1987 Classic and Sportscar. There it was described as having aluminium bonnet, boot and doors, full race engine, close ratio gearbox, aluminium calipers, Dunlop magnesium wheels, long range petrol tank." In the April 1991 Jaguar Quarterly, it was described as restored, and having had the registration 3 BXV.

Dr. Peter Berry
It is with great sadness we report the recent demise of Dr. Peter Berry, the owner of the 1961 Peter Berry Racing Team. His team raced four cars back in the early Sixties, a pair of Mk 2s – 1 BXV and 2 BXV - and the two new 1961 E type roadsters – 3 BXV and 4 BXV. E type 3 BXV, chassis number 10, competed in some of the first races of that year. Dr. Berry was one of the first three racing teams to be set up with early delivery of roadster E types from the Factory by Lofty England - the other teams being Tommy Sopwith and John Coombs, both experienced in racing.
These three teams each had a pair E types - one of which was the racing car for each team, while the other was the 'on show' Paddock car. Chassis number 850013 - 4 BXV – was driven, at times, by Formula One and sports car driver Bruce McLaren who drove for Dr. Peter Berry in that first year.
Dr. Berry's two E types are still on the road. 850013 the 'road car' and Paddock car being John Burton's side-locked 4 BXV car. While the other, the track racer 850010, 3 BXV, is still running but more modified than the days of Dr. Berry - their team colour back in the Sixties was Sherwood Green, which Chassis 13 still is.

Just to add a snippet of information about the history of this car. In 1976 there was a publication "The E Type Newsletter", Editor Peter Griffith (well -known E Type guru) and there was enquiry in the February 1976 issue by Geffrey HOTBLACK of Bristol England who owned the car. He quotes the correct numbers for registration number, chassis number. engine number, and body number. He stated the car was painted red but knew that originally it was green.. The only competition event he mentioned was of a Silverstone race in 1962. He appealed for more information on the history of the car.
The Newsletter was a very short-lived publication in the 1970s

I bought this car in 1968 for about 650 pounds. At that time it was red but the interior was the original green,. A previous owner had spent time getting it roadworthy by fitting what i think was a mk10 inlet manifold with its choke. I wondered if it had webbers at some stage. The engine suffered from corroded liners which let water in to the cylinders. This took a lot of time to discover.
It had Isky cams and the original concertina servo had been replaced with a modern type servo which was fitted where the big air filter stood.
The front suspension was bent and set too low as the front wheels rubbed on the headlights under braking.
These and many other problems were fixed but after all that l drove it all around the UK and sold it for 750pounds in 1969
