Info gathered with permission from:

850002 also "Prototype Number 5, " was assembled early in 1960. After a time, it was referred to as the 'First Production Type," instead of 850001. Pictures of 850002 were used in early brochures. It is reported to have been retained by the factory for several years, and in the 1962/3 period to have been fitted with fuel injection and even a Corvette gearbox. Around 1966 it was destroyed by the factory.

In the "Victory by design" DVD it was mentioned that 850001 and 850002 were confirmed scrapped by the factory. 850003 is the oldest surviving E-type.

The above is also confirmed in Porter's E-type the definitive history, pg 172.

that would then almost certainly be the "red car" seen in the earliest brochures, without the headlamp chrome surrounds, like this one:

more pictures in various books, possible some could be uploaded in here? Cheers, Pekka T.
