850001, also known as "Prototype Number 4," was assembled about the middle of 1959. Possibly because it was the third running E-type, it was sometimes erroneously called 'Prototype Number 3.' lt was for a time referred to as the "First Production Type' before this term was applied to 850002.Ilt was used for development and testing, and was eventually destroyed by the factory.

In the "Victory by design" DVD it was mentioned that 850001 and 850002 were confirmed scrapped by the factory. 850003 is the oldest surviving E-type.
