This 1968 Jaguar XKE Series 1.5 2+2 coupe was acquired by the seller in 1996, and a subsequent refurbishment was completed in 2007. Work included rebuilding the 4.2-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission, refinishing the body in Bordeaux Red, and reupholstering the interior in Biscuit leather. The car is equipped with enclosed headlights, triple SU carburetors, 15″ wire-spoke steel wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, an Alpine aftermarket stereo system, and Vintage Air air conditioning. This XKE Series 1.5 2+2 coupe is now offered with the owner’s manual, spare parts, refurbishment records, and a clean West Virginia title in the seller’s name.
Compared to the contemporary coupe, the 2+2 version of the XKE featured a lengthened wheelbase and increased roof height to accommodate a pair of rear seats. This example was stripped to bare metal and then refinished in Bordeaux Red. Metalwork included a rust repair near the battery housing and a patch for the left frame rail. Additional equipment includes enclosed headlights, a louvered clamshell hood, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, a driver-side mirror, rear vent windows, a side-hinged rear hatch, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by rounded knock-off hubs and are mounted with Goodyear Integrity tires measuring 205/75. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. Timken wheel bearings are said to have been fitted, and the suspension was rebuilt with replacement shocks, polyurethane bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends.
The 2+2 cabin was refurbished and features seating surfaces upholstered in Biscuit leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. A custom center console was added along with Vintage Air air conditioning and an Alpine stereo system with a power antenna, wattage booster, and a subwoofer fitted in the rear floor. Additional interior appointments include black vinyl dash trim, black seat belts, and a sliding rearview mirror. Daytime running lamps are controlled via a switch above the high-beam switch.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The bushings and U-joints were replaced in the steering column during the refurbishment. The five-digit odometer shows 99k miles, and total mileage is unknown.
The 4.2-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors that were acquired by the seller in July 1999. An engine rebuild is said to have included the installation of oversized 9:1 compression pistons, replacement bearings, a Ron David Racing radiator, and a refurbished cylinder head with replacement valve guides, and seals.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission. The seller states that the transmission was rebuilt with Timken bearings and synchronizers and that the rear end was rebuilt with Timken bearings and seals.
Car show awards are included in the sale.
