Sellers description:
This bright red 1974 Jaguar XKE Series III open two-seater delivers everything that its looks promise in a fashion that is uniquely British.

Showing just 71,309 original miles, this E-Type can justifiably be called a survivor. This one has been carefully maintained over the years and repaired as necessary, but never fully disassembled or restored. It's easy to spot E-Types that have never been rusty or damaged, because their enormous bonnets fit well and the doors open and close easily, just as they do on this roadster. The vintage paint offers a soft vintage gloss that draws attention to the length of the front end and the curvaceous rear fenders, and few cars are better at attracting a crowd than this one. Sure, there are a few signs of use and age, but with the collector car world's current fascination with originality, it would be a real shame to repaint it. In addition, the chrome is very good, including the grille and bumpers, although the federally mandated rubber overriders don't do the styling any favors.

Supple black hides fill the cabin with smells that others like Lexus have tried to duplicate, but never quite managed to succeed. The buckets are firm and supportive, and show very little wear aside from what the British refer to as "comfort marks" on the driver's seat cushion. Matching wool carpets have been fitted and their edges are bound for a neatly trimmed look, and the dash pad hasn't been baked by the sun. Handsome Smiths gauges are a British icon, and they're all functional, including the tachometer which offers a surprising 6500 RPM redline. More E-Type charm comes from the center stack with an array of rocker switches, auxiliary gauges, and an older AM/FM cassette stereo head unit down low. The delicate T-handle shifter for the automatic transmission seems out of place in a car with this much performance, but somehow it fits the car's personality perfectly. The top is snug-fitting black canvas and the trunk, while shallow, is tastefully upholstered and in excellent condition.

The exhaust system looks brand new all the way back to the quad exhaust tips. The all-independent suspension perfectly balances handling and ride, and the Jag is equally at home on the interstate or a twisting mountain road, and with a history in Florida, rust is obviously not going to be a major issue here. Inboard disc brakes were a Jaguar tradition left over from racing, and brilliant chrome wire wheels with 185/70/15 redline radials are period perfect.

This 1974 Jaguar E-Type is a Series III roadster that was sold new from Scott-Welch Motor Cars Ltd. of Nashville, Tennessee, in November 1974, and it resided in Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia before the seller purchased it in September 2020. The car is finished in Regency Red over a black interior and is powered by a numbers-matching 5.3-liter V12 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a black canvas convertible soft top, a luggage rack, 15″ chrome knock-off wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a stainless exhaust system, air conditioning, and an aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. This Series III E-Type roadster is now offered with records dating back to 1974, a window sticker, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, an operating, maintenance, and service handbook, and a clean Georgia title in the name of the seller’s business.

The body was refinished in Regency Red during previous ownership and features a black canvas convertible soft top as well as a black top boot. Features include chrome bumpers with black US-spec overriders, a louvered engine cover, quad exhaust tips, and a luggage rack mounted on the deck lid.

15″ chrome knock-off wire wheels are wrapped in redline radial tires. Power-assisted disc brakes with inboard rear discs were standard equipment, and service performed in May 2020 included replacement rear brake rotors and pads, as well as a brake fluid exchange. The front shock absorbers were replaced in 2018.

The interior is trimmed in black leather with matching carpets and door panels as well as a black dashboard. Equipment includes black lap belts, a padded center armrest, an aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and a factory air-conditioning system that was serviced and recharged in July 2020.

Smiths instrumentation consists of a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, as well as gauges for voltage, oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles, approximately 80 of which were added by the seller since September 2020.

The 5.3-liter V12 features four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was factory rated at 272 horsepower. Maintenance performed in 2018 included a rebuilt water pump and an ignition tune-up. Service in 2020 included a coolant exchange, an oil change, and synchronizing the carburetors. The engine identification stamp reads 7S16796LA and matches the engine number listed on the underhood identification plate, as well as the engine number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission that rebuilt in 2018. A stainless exhaust system is fitted, and additional service in May 2020 included a replacement left-side differential stub axle bearing and seal.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers, and shows a manufacture date of April 1, 1974.

The window sticker lists factory options and equipment, and shows a retail price of $10,260 when new.

High-quality, well-preserved, and attractive throughout

Southeastern vehicle from new with owner history

Numbers-matching 5.3-Liter V-12 engine

Three-speed automatic transmission – rebuilt in 2018

Correct stainless-steel exhaust system and chrome wire wheels

Exceptionally well documented from new including JDHT certificate

Final-year example of an unqualified sporting legend

Accompanied by its corresponding Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this compelling 1974 Jaguar E-Type Series III Convertible was manufactured on April 1, 1974, factory-finished in Regency Red over Black leather upholstery – the color combination it sports today. Carrying a $9,200 base MSRP, the E-type was further equipped with desirable factory options including a Borg-Warner automatic transmission ($300), chrome wire wheels ($160), and air conditioning ($600). Dispatched from the factory on August 1, 1974, this U.S.-specification E-Type was purchased on November 18, 1974, from Scott-Welsh Motor Cars in Nashville, Tennessee by Dr. Norman Simms Gallatin. The Doctor retained the Jaguar for the next 13 years, with the factory-issued service booklet duly stamped through August 1979 and 44,107 recorded miles. Dr. Gallatin sold the Jaguar at 53,967 miles on March 23, 1987, to a fellow Tennessee resident, and then on May 5, 1989, the E-Type was acquired at 66,782 accumulated miles via a specialist dealer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by David Manwaring. He retained the car to April 4, 2005, when he sold it to the next long-term owner from Atlanta, Georgia, who eventually sold the Jaguar at 71,418 miles in September 2020 to noted Georgia collector and classic-car trader Ivan Ruiz.

As offered, the E-Type is exceptionally attractive and highly enjoyable throughout, clearly continuing to benefit from an older, well-maintained restoration. At the time of writing, 72,030 miles are indicated, consistent with the progressive mileage readings recorded on the wealth of service and sale documents on hand with the vehicle. Retaining the matching numbers 5,343cc V-12 powerplant, factory-rated 241 SAE Net horsepower with four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, the Jaguar features its factory-specified color combination, including the very nice Regency Red paint finish, well-maintained interior, black canvas top, gleaming chrome and brightwork, iconic chrome wire wheels, and factory-correct stainless steel exhaust system with quad outlets. The V-12 engine is well detailed and retains its original character and appearance with proper factory components in place. Accompanying items include “knock-off” wheel tools, a roadside jack, and a spare wire wheel and tire combination, all properly stowed within the Jaguar’s trunk, plus the factory-original large rubber bumpers that can be reinstalled as desired.

A light mechanical recommissioning performed during 2018 included the rebuilding of all four carburetors, a transmission service, and the installation of new transmission mounts. A new set of 5 period-style Vredestein radial tires was completed in the past year with only an approximate 700 miles of use since then. Factory-specified air conditioning and an updated stereo head unit featuring Bluetooth connectivity heighten the fast Grand Touring experience offered by this late-production E-Type. Documentation is excellent and exhaustive, from the original window sticker and purchase paperwork to the factory-issued owner’s manual and service booklet, service records, ownership history, subsequent purchase documents, and the aforementioned JDHT certificate confirming factory data.

An unqualified sporting legend, Jaguar’s E-Type remains a true object of automotive desire today with its sexy, projectile-like design, competition roots, and outstanding performance – even by today’s jaded standards. Accordingly, This very well-maintained and documented example from the last E-Type model year offers an incomparable opportunity to savor the sophisticated V-12, Series III iteration in the most desirable open-air body style.
