Private Party Or Dealer: Private Party

The 1973 Jaguar E-Type is a Series III roadster that is finished in red over tan leather with a black soft top and is powered by a numbers-matching 5.3-liter V12 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car features 15″ chrome knock-off wire wheels, a luggage rack, quad Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, a 123Ignition Bluetooth programmable distributor, and an Alpine cassette stereo. It was acquired by the seller out of New York in 2020, and work has since included fluid changes, a new starter relay, and refreshment of the cooling system. This Series III E-Type is offered with removed factory parts, a jack, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in red and was reportedly repainted during previous ownership. Features include a black Mohair soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, a louvered hood, a driver-side mirror, a chrome-finished luggage rack, and central dual exhaust outlets. The rear bumper shows deterioration of the chrome plating, there is a crack in the windshield, and blemishes are noted in the paint on the rear valance.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock off wire wheels with earless spinners are wrapped in 215/70 Westlake RP18 tires that were reportedly installed since the photos were taken, and a spare is located in the trunk. Braking is handled by four wheel discs.

The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in tan leather with matching door panels and carpets. An Alpine cassette stereo is mounted in the center stack, and the seller states that the A/C compressor appears to have been replaced though the system is inoperable. Other noted flaws include tears at the top of the seat backs near the top mechanism, wrinkling of the leather upholstery, and a non-functional heater fan.

A wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and center-mounted auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 92k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 5.3-liter V12 features single overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank, a 123Ignition Bluetooth programmable ignition distributor, quad Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, and an aluminum radiator. The seller reports that the carburetors were rebuilt and the rubber fuel hoses were replaced under prior ownership. A new otter switch, cooling cable harness, header tank, and relay have been added by the seller, along with a replacement starter relay, voltage stabilizer, voltage regulator, and battery. The car received oil, transmission, and differential fluid changes in 2020. A removed PerTronix ignition system and Lucas distributor are included in the sale.

Engine stamping 7S14157LA matches the chassis plate. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
