Private Party or Dealer: Dealer

This 1973 Jaguar XKE Roadster has reportedly resided in California since new and spent 21 years in storage as part of a Santa Monica collection before the selling dealer acquired it two months ago. Finished in Signal Red over black leather, the car is powered by a numbers-matching 5.3-liter V12 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. A recommissioning following the seller’s purchase included a tune-up, oil change, carburetor adjustment, radiator recore, new clutch master cylinder, and new tires. This Series III E-Type is now offered by the selling dealer with a tool kit and a clean California title.

The body is finished in Signal Red, and the seller believes the exterior was repainted at some point in the past. 15” chrome wire wheels feature earless knock-offs and were mounted with Suretrac whitewall tires in July 2019. US-market rubber bumper over-riders have been retained, as have side markers. Seven-digit California blue license plates are worn at front and rear and shown a previous registration date of 1998.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather with matching carpets and a leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel. An older Pioneer head unit has been added in the console. Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 5-digit odometer showing 45k miles, 100 of which have been added by the selling dealer. A new temperature sensor was installed after the seller’s acquisition.

The 5.3-liter V12 features four Zenith Stromberg carburetors and is paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was removed from storage approximately two months ago, and a subsequent recommissioning included adjusting the carburetors, changing the oil, performing a tune-up, recoring the radiator, repairing water pipes, repairing a leak at the speedometer drive connection, and replacing the clutch master cylinder. Most of the engine number can be seen stamped above and matches engine number 7S10529LB on the firewall tag.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
