This 1971 Jaguar XKE is a Series II roadster that was produced in June 1970 and originally distributed in the US by British Leyland of New York. The car is finished in silver over blue leather upholstery and powered by a numbers-matching 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, a chrome luggage rack, and knock-off 15″ wire wheels. Acquired by the seller in August 2020, work performed under current ownership has included replacing the primary clutch hydraulic cylinder in May 2021. This Series II XKE roadster is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, an owner’s handbook, a tool kit, a battery tender, and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s trust.

Finished from the factory in silver, the car is believed to have been repainted under previous ownership. Features include a black soft top along with a chrome-finished luggage rack, driver-side mirror, and bumpers with overriders.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are wrapped in 205/70 Bridgestone Turanza narrow-whitewall tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard rear units. The ball joints are noted to be due for replacement.

The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in dark blue leather with a matching center console and carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, a center console armrest, three-point seatbelts, and Jaguar-branded rubber floor mats.

A wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline, and centrally-mounted auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 81k miles, approximately 700 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and produced 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque when new.

Engine block stamping 7R13406-9 matches the number shown on the data plate provided in the gallery below.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The primary clutch hydraulic cylinder was replaced in May 2021. Corrosion is visible on exhaust system components.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates a manufacture date of June 18, 1970, along with original distribution through British Leyland of New York, serial numbers, and factory colors.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
