ebay Item # 2419968401 6/19/03
Sellers comment:
1970 Jaguar XKE 2+2 with a 4.2 engine, 4 speed transmission, black inside. This is a great car in great condition except the transmission. This is a rare car with power steering (pump rebuilt last summer). All the electrical stuff works, no problems that I know of. AM/FM/Cassette, Has a very cold AC with has been converted to 134A and new hoses and re-built compressor (all done last summer for around ($800) and an aluminum radiator ($900). Car has almost new tires with less then 400 miles on them. I did add an alarm system and electric door locks (around $350, you can't tell door locks have been added, it's all hidden inside the door panels). I also put on an electronic ignition system with high capacity coil, starts easy and has always ran great. Glass is good. I think the battery is about 1 year old. This car needs nothing except to go to a transmission shop and the paint could use a good polishing. Also has spare tire and jack. No tears that I know of in side, looks fine for a 33 year old car. I would like to say it is rust free, but there is no such thing. It is very clean for the age, has always been stored inside that I know of and it shows. Rubbers around steering arms etc are almost new. I'm told the mileage is correct at 60,609, but tell me how you know for sure? It looks and runs like it is correct and I believe it is. This is my 2nd XKE that I have owned and the 4th that I have helped maintained. This one is by far the best one I have been around.

Vehicle Condition
Everything on this car works great, even the AC, with the exception of the transmission. The clutch peddle is soft, the car will pull and move in gear but acts like the transmission is slipping very bad, you would not want to drive it this way. Might just be a bad clutch cylinder or slave cylinder or maybe clutch plates, I just don't know or have time to fool with it.

FWIW I believe from this sellers description and private correspondence that this car needs clutch work and likely nothing wrong with the tranny. Very possible that its simply the clutch master cyl.

Sellers description:
THIS CAR IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!

THE UNDERNEATH OF THIS CAR LOOKS JUST AS GOOD AS THE BODY!!! DEFINATELY NO RUST, OR BONDO!!!

1970 JAGAUR XKE 2+2 E-TYPE. THIS CAR HAS 60610 ORIGINAL MILES,WITH FACTORY A/C AND HAS BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND GARAGE KEPT. THIS CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE BODY IS NEAR PERFECT, WITH ONE DING IN THE HOOD. THE HONDURAS MAROON PAINT IS EXCELLENT, WITH A FEW MINOR SCRATCHES. I WOULD RATE THE BODY 9 OUT OF 10. ALL CHROME ON THIS CAR IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. THE WHEELS ARE ABOUT A 8.5 OUT OF 10. THEY CLEAN UP REALLY NICE. THE TIRES ARE LIKE NEW, THEY ARE COOPER COBRA RADIALS. ALL THE BRAKES INCLUDING MASTER CYLINDER IS NEW. THE INTERIOR OF THIS CAR IS LIKE NEW. EVERYTHING WORKS ON THIS CAR INSIDE AND OUT. I WOULD RATE THE INTERI0R A 9.5 OUT OF 10. THE 4.2L ENGINE OF THIS JAGUAR RUNS GOOD. IT DOES NEED A FEW MINOR THINGS. 1. THE OIL FILTER SETUP LEAKS OIL, SO I HAVE THE UPDATED KIT FOR A SCREW ON FILTER, IT JUST NEEDS INSTALLED. ALSO, IT LEAKS FLUID FROM A HEAD GASKET, SO I HAVE A NEW GASKET SET THAT NEEDS INSTALLED. THE CAR HAS A TOUGH TIME IDLING, BECAUSE IT HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN IN SOME TIME, AND PROBABLY NEEDS NEW GAS. THIS CAR ALSO HAS A NICE ALUMINUM RADIATOR INSTALLED, WITH AN ELECTRIC FAN. THERE ARE ALOT OF NEW PARTS ON THIS CAR, AND I HAVE RECIEPTS FOR ALOT OF THEM. CAR ALSO COMES WITH A HUGE BOOK THAT TELLS YOU ANYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS CAR, AND MAINTAIN IT. ALSO THIS CAR HAS REMOTE CONTROL LOCKS INSTALLED. ALL IN ALL, IF YOU FIXED THE TWO PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE, THIS CAR WOULD BE PERFECT. VERY NICE DRIVER, OR EVEN A GOOD SHOW CAR. THE WINNING BIDDER OF THIS CAR WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
