Ebay item 7/15/05
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
Current bid $12,600.00 (Reserve not met), 4 bids, 5 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
This is a 1964 3.8 liter Jaguar Fixed-head Coupe.___ This car is a nicely restored number 2 driver. The car had a front-subframe-off, back-axle-out restoration of the body, fully rebuilt engine, and most of the interior replaced. It has been driven under 1000 miles since the restoration.

Body and Chrome: The car has been driven, so it has the usual minor chips and there is one shallow dent in the cowl between the hood and the driver’s door. Other than that, the body is as good as it looks in the pictures. The trim around the windows and headlights was not re-chromed but is presentable. Parking lights, tail lights and bumpers were re-chromed.

Engine: The car was restored by a man named Ray Sykes in McHenry, Illinois, who has restored a number of XKE coupes. Ray says the engine was fully rebuilt. Ray is mainly a body man who traded body work for the engine rebuild work, so there are no receipts. The engine starts and runs as a fresh engine should and has strong oil pressure. I had the oil pan off to replace a dry gasket, and the bottom of the engine looks new and clean and has the larger capacity oil pump of a 4.2 engine.

Interior: The seat covers are vinyl, not leather, and were not replaced. Upon close inspection you will see they are worn, but they are presentable and serviceable, as you can see from the pictures. The vinyl on the left and right outsides of the foot wells was not replaced. It is brittle and should be replaced. All of the rest of the vinyl, carpet, and mockette was replaced.
Other Items: 1. Ray does not replace the factory soundproofing material on the bottom of the exterior (the factory called it anti-drum), because he finds that rust starts and crawls under it once it gets chipped. So for sound deadening I added felt/foil insulation under all carpets.
2. The car has air conditioning. The air conditioning unit blows cold air but has some limitations. Ray says it was on the car when he got it. It is a Jaguar A/C unit, but must come from a later car since there were no factory A/C units installed in 3.8 liter cars. Whoever installed it was an optimist, because the car had the original single blade electric fan and a generator, not an alternator. The factory fan was not enough to cool the engine with the A/C condenser in front of the radiator, so I added a SPAL pusher electric fan. It is a little noisier than I would like, but the engine will not overheat. At low engine speed the generator may not supply enough current to hold in the A/C clutch, so the A/C should be used for cruising, not for stop-and-go driving. Converting to an alternator would be a worthwhile effort.

3. The car has 4 P205/70R15 Yokahma tires, which were new with the restoration. The spare tire is used.

4. The car comes with a new-in-the-box Pertronix distributor unit and coil which I intended to install when the points needed attention, which has not happened yet. The car comes with a car cover and a factory service manual (a reprint covering all 3.8, 4.2, and V-12 XKE’s).

NOTES:
The car is titled as a 1965 Jaguar. I am advertising it as a 1964 because no 3.8 liter Series I XKE Jaguars were produced in 1965. I have been told the car was originally sold in Spain, where they are titled with the year in which they are sold. Note that the odometer is in kilometers, not miles.

This strikingly gorgeous Jaguar coupe is truly a drivers car and not for the strict purist. The car was originally delivered new to Peter Linden located in Frankfurt Germany as a European spec example in February 1964, as confirmed by the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate. Peter Lindner was a well known Jaguar dealer and accomplished race driver as well. It was sold to an owner in Spain by his dealership and titled in 1965, as a common practice in that time and retains that registration. The car later made its way to the US. A some point in time the original 3.8 liter engine was replaced with another correct 3.8 liter 6 cylinder engine. During a much later restoration in 2005, a complete bare metal tub and subframe respray was done changing the original gold color to it's current signal red. The engine and drive train were rebuilt at that time. The car also was fitted with a later Series 2 bonnet retrofitted with covered headlamps. It was also nicely fitted with a Jaguar factory AC unit from a Series 2 car as well. This Jaguar coupe has been very well maintained with enhanced electronic ignition and supplemental electric cooling fan additions. Recent service has included a carb rebuild and major tuneup. The front brake calipers were also completely rebuilt. This car also has a complete tool kit and owners handbook.

This most handsome Jaguar Coupe is a pleasure to drive with strong engine performance and highly stabile handling characteristics. Once again, maybe not for the purist but certainly a most affordable and solid collectible automobile that you will find any where on the market today.
