This seems to be a OTS body number?

I just looked at the original plate and it definately says R 5517. I didn't know you could identify the spec from the body number. when i got the car in 1990 it had been roughly painted red but the engine bay was still blue and you could still make out the body number hand written on to the firewall in yellow crayon

i just uploaded a pic of the (obviously original) chassis plate. i take roger's point about the "R" body number, having looked at everyone else's but i can't explain it! i know i had a copy of the factory record but i don't know where it is now.
i just located the separate body number on the LH rear wheel arch and it says "V.7217" !! the car has obviously not been cut and shut so i can only assume it's a 47 year old factory error.

Further to earlier comments, the engine number on the plate seems to be transposed! I notice 889749 has the engine next to mine if you read it "RA 4871-9" and not 7148 (which appears on the plate.
I recall the faxed sheet from Jaguar cars ltd that i used to register the car in the UK in 1990 stated that it was built on 31st Dec. 1963 .Maybe this goes some way to explain why the guy who stamped the plate up may not have been concentrating fully! Will investigate what's actually stamped on the engine.
