    Auction description:

    Auction Date: 04 December 2010

    Lot - 1963 Jaguar E-Type S1 3.8 Fixedhead Coupé

    * Registration: 38 BYB

    * Chassis Number: 888779

    * Engine Number: RA2330-8

    * Odometer reading:

    * Estimate: £50,000 – £70,000

    The lefthand drive car on sale today was manufactured in June 1963 and delivered to Italy in September of the same year whence it was sold to its first owner, a Signor Mazzolini Umberto through Italian motor dealers SVAJ. The car was originally Opalescent Silver Grey with a Black interior - as it still is; albeit today the car sports many uprated sporting modifications....

    The last registration the car had in Italy was BS288451 (Brescia) and it would appear to have had that number since at least 1970. The Italian equivalent of the log book is offered with this Lot so therefore if the car returned to Italy, the new owner could potentially reclaim the cars original registration.

    In 1988, the car was purchased in Italy by Kenneth Hall, a renowned Jaguar collector, and brought back to the UK to join his collection of some 15+ Jaguars at his purpose-built garages in the South-West of the country. The vendor bought the car off Kenneth Hall in February 2001 and set about the remarkable rebuild that brings the car to its current standard.

    The vendor states that "the car was structurally very good but tired mechanically and cosmetically". He consequently completely rebuilt the car and modified it to its current specification. Originally, the project was undertaken to create a fast road/race car, but by the time he had finished it he had a young family and consequently no time to use it. Subsequently, the car has never been raced, and this is also the reason the car is now for sale.

    The body was so good having spent its early life in Italy and then in a heated garage as part of Kenneth Hall's collection that it still has its original sills and floors. The only new metal is the modified rear wheel arches, alloy bonnet and alloy doors created by Coventry Prototype Panels who assemble the Spyker Cars in the UK.

    38 BYB has undergone a sympathetic transformation to include all aspects of body, mechanics, interior, and wiring. The car boasts Jaguar 'D' type alloy wheels, full competition roll cage, Jaguar lightweight E-type seats with alloy base and leather trim, plus other essential racing modifications including perspex side windows, plumbed in fire system, external battery cut off, four point Willans racing harnesses, monza fuel cap, Stack rev counter and mechanical oil pressure and water temperature gauges.

    The car houses a high specification engine built by distinguished Jaguar specialists CKL Developments. Chassis 888779 is a matching numbers car with the exception of the gearbox which the vendor sensibly replaced with a later E-type close ratio all synchro gearbox and competition clutch. Add to this, the competition standard engine now runs on Triple Webbers with alternator conversion and ammeter, oil cooler, alloy fluid reservoirs, radiator and electric fan all contained by new heavy duty uprated engine frames from E-type Fabs.

    The front suspension uprights are upgraded, as are the brakes boasting uprated master cylinders and servo, XJ12 front brake discs and four pot callipers, rear brake callipers with larger pistons by Coopercraft and bespoke rear brake cooling ducts. The sellers have spent time with this car and can attest that the competition exhaust system and tubular manifold delivers a satisfying growl, but not so disruptive that the car would not be welcomed by your neighbours!

    There is no doubt that all the works undertaken to 38 BYB have been done meticulously and at no expense spared; We have in our possession an enormous history file with receipts well in excess of £55,000 making plain the devotion and care that the vendor has committed to getting this car right. These don't even include the receipts for the alloy doors, roll cage, close ratio gearbox, painting of the body and re-chroming!

    ....What a pity that after so much time, dedication and money, for just a fraction of the build cost it could potentially be you we see behind the wheel at fast road-going touring events in 2011!

    The car has an MOT until November 2011 and the private registration number will remain with the car.

    Italian title

    Chassis n° 888779

    - Meticulous older preparation

    - Ideal for regularity events

    - Very powerful model

    This Series 1 E-Type coupé was the subject of a very extensive " lightweight " preparation some twenty years ago, carried out by a British preparer. Stripped of its bumpers, the car was fitted with an exterior circuit-breaker, a quick-release fuel cap, bolted-in roll-bar and various elements of aluminium bodywork, including the lengthy front bonnet fastened with leather straps. The famous 6-cylinder twin-cam engine has also been modified to improve its performance. This has included fitting triple Weber carburettors with their six intake trumpets and a special aluminium exhaust manifold and radiator. The interior is in good condition with two beautifully-crafted black leather seats, and a leather-clad steering wheel.

    This lovely E-Type was already in this configuration when our Italian collector acquired it, attracted by the quality of the modifications. Superb in a colour close to Gun Metal Grey, with Dunlop centre-lock wheels, this machine with its flowing and pared-down styling, is perfect for regularity rallies such as the prestigious Tour Auto. The standard E-Type is a powerful car, and this preparation makes it even more competitive.

    Estimation 70,000 - 110,000 €
