885003 was reported to have been built by the Experimental department. It was said to have been shipped to the US on February 28, 1961, and to have been a US show car. Its current whereabouts is unknown.

The original motor to 885003 is R 1004-9 and is currently in 885008. I purchased a fhc with the head R 1004-9 took the head off subsequently located the block at Al Garz shop circa 1998 . I later acquired the front subframe with 885003 stamped on the upper corner from John Delong in 2002 . I believe the car is located some where in New Jersy reportedly in a barn and await its reapperance. Mike Mueller

I believe 885003 is probably the first E Type Al Garz converted to Chevrolet V 8 power. You found the front subframe because Al constructed a new one, while retaining the front cross member. The Green Car, as Al called it, had a Lathum supercharged 377 ci small block, and would it go!!! Many years ago the owner moved from New Jersey to New Haven so it could be in a barn in either place.

I currently have chassis #885003 and it is in restoration. I was given the "Crossed Eye Bullet" as we called it when we were kids by my father who purchased it from the Inskip Auto Dealership in New England right after the 1961 New York Auto Show. He and Al Garz did convert it to a Chevy small block with the Lathham and it was extremely quick. It will be put back to the way my father had run and raced it. Built the year I was born and the inspiration to my own racing career the car has become a family heirloom and will enjoy a life of vintage racing in short time!

    This is really interesting news.

I have to admit that I would love to see engine and subframe being reunited with the body and this to be restored as original as possible (without sunroof, etc.).

Maybe there could be a deal or a swap with Mike Müller as he owns many early FHC and the original block and subframe of 885003.

But as it is a car your father purchase in the year of your birth as well as having grown up with this car plus being raced by your father I understand that it makes it de facto impossible for you either to return to original specs or to exchange it with another car.

It is just one of the first cars ever build and has a bit of historic importance prior to having been converted.

But please keep us in any case updated on progress and the final result and use.

    Thanks!

From what I am told by my father he and Mr. Muller have had contact. By that time my father had already given me the car which I have no interest in parting with. In the conversation my father and Mr. Muller had it was made clear by Mr. Muller had had no desire to part with the engine and frame either. So it would seem they will remain apart anyway. The project is continuing as I have envisioned.

I will continue to post as we go along.

Stan, I have the third E Type Al Garz converted. I applaud that complete rebuild you have pictured above. I know this an old thread, but wonder how your restoration is coming? I'd like to exchange information with you
    about these cars.

    Thanks, Rod
