The Interior

Completely retrimmed

Restored instruments

Retro-styled modern radio unit

On the inside, this E-Type looks to be in excellent condition and the vendor informs us that the interior has been entirely retrimmed in a rather fetching shade of red which perfectly offsets the black exterior.

The leather seats have been reupholstered and consequently present really well, with no damage or excessive wear we could discern. The same goes for the dashboard, with a freshly recovered top and smart instrument panel containing an array of switchgear and gauges. The vendor informs us that the Smiths instruments were all sent away for restoration and recalibration and now work impeccably. Beneath the main dash panel there is also a discreet modern radio which incorporates retro styling and certainly doesn’t look out of place however unfortunately does not currently operate.

As one would expect from a beautifully restored car, the driving controls are as new with the distinctive Jaguar ‘Growler’ displaying clearly on the gear lever, and the same can be said for the pedals and that exquisite wood-rimmed steering wheel.

All of the carpeting, including the boot floor, has also been replaced and there is even a brand new hood cover for when the soft-top is lowered. Everything has been thought of!

This Jaguar’s cockpit is exactly as it should be and what a fabulous place to be as you pilot this roadster down the road!

The Exterior

Bare metal respray

New wire wheels

Supplied with matching hard-top

Having been subject to a bare metal restoration, the paintwork looks gorgeous and the black finish really suits the curvaceous E-type styling. Black tends to show up the slightest of imperfections yet it is seems difficult to find any here!

We understand that all the chrome trim was removed and sent away for rechroming and the wire wheels are new replacement items, shod with new tyres. So far as we could see, all of the brightwork presents very well without any pitting or damage.

The soft top roof has been replaced and is in excellent condition, operating smoothly and with a clear back window. This Roadster has the added benefit of a very elegant removable hard top - a remarkably versatile setup for year-round classic motoring. The windscreen and windows look to be in good order and the same goes for the light lenses, although the headlamp covers have a few marks visible when the lights are switched on.

The Mechanics

3.8-litre straight-six

4-speed moss gearbox

All mechanicals entirely rebuilt by Rushton Engineering

New wiring loom and rear suspension

As a 1964 car, this E-Type is one of the last to feature Jaguar’s 3.8-litre straight-six with a partial synchromesh gearbox. The engine, transmission and rear axle were entirely rebuilt by marque specialists Rushton Engineering and we are informed that the brakes were completely gone through with the rear suspension being entirely rebuilt at the same time. Rushton also fitted a new wiring loom, so everything electrical reportedly functions as it should.

One of the great things about E-Types is that when the clamshell bonnet is lifted, the mechanicals are completely on show and this example looks particularly fine with its rebuilt engine along with everything else, the level of detail is truly remarkable. You can also see that the block has been repainted, the valve covers polished and the exhaust manifold coated.

As you would expect, the car drives really well and handles beautifully. There’s a real magic and mechanical feel to these early E-Types and the driving experience is a rather visceral affair.

Recent extensive restoration

Offered with the desirable factory hardtop

Introduced in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared with its instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. While, inevitably, the car's stupendous straight-line performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines, there was a lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type and, indeed, the E-Type would be one of the last great sportscars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8 litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint. Mainly because it weighed around 500lb less than the XK150 but also, because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.

Delivered new on 12th March 1964 to Jaguar Cars New York, this wonderful matching numbers example is finished in the very elegant colour combination of metallic black coachwork over a red leather interior and comes complete with the desirable factory hardtop. Recently the subject of a comprehensive restoration undertaken by a marque specialists, this E-Type has undergone a conversion to right hand drive, a full bare metal respray, an extensive mechanical rebuild, and a complete interior retrim including a new hood and restored Smiths dials. The engine, gearbox, and rear differential were comprehensively rebuilt by Rushton Engineering Ltd. This very well-presented example has had a vast amount of money spent on it during its restoration and comes complete with a history file detailing the restoration, photographs of the rebuild, many sundry invoices, its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, and the current UK registration document. The perfect candidate for those long-distance continental tours or that summer trip to the south of France.
