This 1964 Jaguar XKE is Series I open two-seater that was delivered from the factory in Carmen Red over black and dispatched to the US on December 5, 1963 for distribution through Jaguar Cars of New York. Power is provided by a 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six backed by a four-speed manual gearbox. The car is reported to have remained with the previous owner for over 25 years before being acquired by the seller in 2018. Work performed within the past year and 2,000 miles included rebuilding the carburetors, installing a new coolant tank, and performing a tune-up. This Series I E-Type is now being offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, records from recent service, and a clean Indiana title in the seller’s name.

Built on October 23, 1963, the car was originally finished in Carmen Red and was repainted under previous ownership. Closeups of the shut lines, brightwork, badges, lenses, and fuel door are provided in the gallery. Note the covered headlights and taillights positioned above the rear bumper, both Series I features.

The soft top and boot cover are trimmed in black canvas, and chrome wire wheels are secured with two-eared spinners and wrapped in a set of 185-series Avon tires. The rear bumpers are replacement units, though the removed items are included in the sale.

The low-back bucket seats are trimmed in black leather and mounted over matching-color carpets. Some wear is evident on the driver’s seat.

This Series I features a black vinyl dash and padded center armrest. Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, as well as fuel-level, oil-pressure, and water-temperature gauges. A Lucas amperage indicator is mounted along with the auxiliary gauges. Under 59k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, about 2k of which were added by the seller.

The 3.8L twin-cam six is paired with a four-speed gearbox and features a factory triple-SU induction system, as well as a stainless exhaust and modern radiator. Service during the seller’s ownership included rebuilding the carburetors and installing a new coolant tank, ignition coil, and spark plugs.

Cylinder head stamping RA3609-9 matches the engine number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.

The production date and factory configuration are listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate. A matching chrome spare tire is present in the rear compartment, though the tool kit and jack are missing.

It is listed again on eBay (5/16/23) in what appears to be a clear scam. The URL: www.ebay.com/itm/404285372861~WtkXVQL&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwIGwRn8dXM5Oh4Hilmf9JxVAfhUgH0lC1YIcVz0VOhCGK ...

The listing shows the location as: Lakewood, OH, with a seller having '0' ratings. Calling the number on one of the pictures for the listing shows the "dealer" in Kissimmee FL, which is where the scammer stated the car was. He claimed to have bought it from an auction, and lists the car on this website for $65,800!

When asked to schedule a showing of the vehicle, he said: "I'll get back to you on the time."

This car appears to be one of several being used now in scams like this on eBay, and fake dealership sites. If there is a way to flag this vehicle ID in future for those of us trying to buy a Jaguar - it might help a great deal.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
