Ebay item 7/9/04
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
Current bid $5,000.00 (Reserve not met), 1 bid, 9 days left in auction. 132k miles.

Sellers description:
# Top is in very good condition
# Series I engine with a Series II transmission
# Wooden steering wheel
# The Vredestein tires have a lot of tread left on them
# Classic covered headlamps
# 4 speaker stereo
I am a private seller who has owned, enjoyed, and maintained this Series I E-Type Roadster since 1988. I am located in Bedminster, NJ

I have enjoyed this car since 1988. When I bought it the speedometer was not working and showed 7,637 miles but I have to assume it was 107,637 miles. I immediately had the car’s engine rebuilt and replaced the Series 1 transmission with a Series 2 that made shifting much easier. I still have the Series 1 transmission which is available to the buyer. Since then, I have kept the car garaged and professionally maintained. Since the rebuild, I have had to replace the speedometer but I have only driven it on weekends around town and probably have not put more than 15,000 miles on the car. The reason I am selling is that I am not able to use it enough to justify keeping it maintained like it should be. I just had the car overhauled and the mechanical and electrical systems are all in good working order. My mechanic’s contact info is available upon request and the car is available for inspection. The car runs very well and is a screamer if you want it to be. The brakes are not as good as the brakes on today’s cars but are in good working order. There is some rust on the floor pans and other small areas but nothing structural. This is a great running car that I have had a lot of fun driving and watching the envious reactions from others. This can also be easily made into a show car by repainting, fixing the crack on the top dashboard, the hole in the glove box and taking some dings out. The wooden steering wheel has a small crack in it but has served me well for 16 years. The original radio was not working so I put in an Alpine stereo radio cassette and added 2 Boston Acoustic rear speaker so it could be heard well even while roaring along with the top down. If you want the classic that is in the Modern Museum of Art it is the Series 1 roadster. You can enjoy it today and easily make it worth a lot more tomorrow.

I purchased this car off of eBay and am just finishing up a concourse level restoration. The car was ompetely stripped down and aci-bath washed. A whole new floor pan was installed and a $20K body and paint job completed. The entire power train has been rebuilt and the original Moss tranny reinstalled. The car was returned to it's original black exerior and a new red interior has been installed. The car is authentic with most of the original bolts stripped, re-blackened and re-used and all the chrome refinished (except the over-ridres). Authentic Cheney clamps have been used and no detail has been missed. I hope to sell it next spring.

The restoration is complete and the car has been accepted at the Butterfield and Bonham's auction this August in Monterey. It has come out gorgeous. You can see more at auction-bob.home.att.net/64-home.htm

Auction description:
Sale 15398 - An Important Sale of Collectors' Motorcars and Automobilia, 17 Aug 2007
Quail Lodge Resort & Golf Club, Carmel, California
Lot No: 455•
Fresh from restoration
1963 Jaguar XKE 3.8-Liter Series I Roadster
Chassis no. 879913
Engine no. RA3110-9
This superbly restored, matching numbers XKE roadster was purchased in 2004 by the current owner in New Jersey. Sold new via Jaguar Cars New York, the car appears to have been on the East Coast for most, if not all, of its life. After inspection it was concluded that the XKE had sat for a long period of time. There was rust in the floor pans but no corrosion underneath the car that could be attributed to road salts. All four splined hubs had a flattened section indicating the car may have sat on concrete blocks minus its wheels. The car had a later all-synchromesh transmission in it but came with the original, matching number Moss transmission. It was very original and mostly unmolested in every other aspect.

The restoration process commenced with a complete strip down to the bare chassis. All hardware was retained and re-used wherever possible. The only accident damage/repair found was in the right rear corner. New sheet metal from SNG Barratt/Martin Robley was installed, comprising complete floors on both sides; sill shut panels; and outer sills. All the original chrome was stripped and re-plated except the bumper over-riders, which were replaced. All useable, original bolts were stripped and re-blackened, while all original components that could be restored were bead-blasted and either re-plated or painted as original. This includes areas that are not easy to inspect such as the inner door mechanisms, under dash and rear drive assembly.
No corners have been cut on this totally rebuilt car, as evidenced by the impressive inventory of authentic parts used in the rebuild. (Far too lengthy to reproduce here, a full list of works carried out and components replaced is available on request). Particularly noteworthy hard-to-find parts sourced are the Cheny hose clamps; new 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears; Dunlop brake and clutch master cylinders; Lucas headlamps and license number lights; Lucas horns; Otter coolant fan temperature control switch; Lucas in-tank fuel pump and sender; complete and accurate tool kit and jack; correct, fully functional positive-ground Motorola radio (discreetly modified to accommodate an MP3 player input); and four ‘new old stock’ Dunlop ‘curly hub’ wire wheels, made in England and kept boxed since 1978.

Completed in May 2007 and as near to a ‘showroom fresh’ example as you are likely to find anywhere, this wonderful XKE roadster is offered with restoration invoices and Certificate of Title.

Sold for $120,000 plus Premium and tax Lot Notice
Lot 455, a 1963 Jaguar XKE 3.8-Liter Series I Roadster, is titled as a 1964 but sold as a 1963.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
