This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive, Series I open two-seater that was completed on March 6, 1962 and distributed in the US through Jaguar Cars of New York. It was purchased new by Robert Reese, the longest-serving mayor of Asheboro, North Carolina, and remained with him for 42 years, being used in parades and for weekend drives until his passing in 1999. It then remained with the original owner’s family until 2004, when it was purchased by BaT user Lstepp4re. It was later passed to an Arizona owner in early 2010 who commissioned a mechanical refurbishment, including installation of a Classic Jaguar five-speed gearbox conversion and aluminum radiator. The car was acquired by by the selling dealer for his father in 2013, and after being sold in 2017 it was reacquired by the seller later that year. The numbers-matching 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six remains fitted, and additional modifications include a heavy-duty electric cooling fan, high-torque starter, electronic ignition, and a Bell free-flow stainless steel exhaust system. Finished in its factory combination of Cream over red leather, this XKE is now offered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and a clean Nevada title.

The car underwent an exterior repaint in 1993 in Cream, the original shade as indicated on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. It is reported that the door jambs, engine compartment, and inner trunk were not refinished at that time. The black soft top is a correct older replacement with a tan underside, and the factory boot cover remains with the car. Series I exterior features include covered headlights and small bumpers with guards.

Chrome wire wheels feature two-eared knock-offs and wear 185-series Universal Sport redline tires featuring an H speed rating. Power-assisted braking is handled by discs all around, with the rear units located inboard. Four-wheel independent suspension includes a torsion-bar setup with tubular shock absorbers up front, along with double coilovers and radius arms out back.

The cabin is trimmed in red leather over the bucket seats, door panels, and sills, with aluminum trim on the center dash face, radio plate, and console surfaces that is unique to 3.8L XKEs built through late 1963. Correct red carpeting lines the footwells, along with Amco rubber floor mats. Additional features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a console-mounted radio with adjacent speakers, and Series 1 toggle switches.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 51k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added during the seller’s time with the car.

The numbers-matching 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox that was added during a mechanical refresh performed by Gregory Nell of British Auto Repair in Scottsdale, Arizona. Electronic ignition was also added at that time, along with an aluminum radiator, a heavy-duty electric cooling fan, and a high-torque starter. The seller has performed all maintenance service since his purchase of the car in 2013, including a rebuild of the triple SU carburetors and fuel system to accommodate use of ethanol fuel.

Engine number R4372-9 is shown stamped on the block, matching the number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Certificate. A matching stamp is also on the cylinder head. Work in April 2020 included a tune-up, synchronizing the carburetors, changing the fluids, and inspecting other systems.

A Bell free-flow stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted by the seller.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original colors and component numbers, as well as the build and dispatch dates. The car was highlighted on the cover of and used in a comparison test in a 2005 issue of Classic Motorsports magazine. A 1999 profile of the original owner following his passing includes mention of the car and can be read here. The purchase of the car by Lstepp4re in 2004 was featured in an episode of the TV show Barrett-Jackson Car Search that year, during which it was also featured in a Barrett-Jackson website tutorial. Walk-around and driving videos are attached below and feature additional details about the car.
