Sold at Christies, Greenwich, Ct., 6/5/05, $82,250, Odo 23,527 miles. SCM reports 1,200 miles since restoration in 2000. Excellent paint, brightwork with fit and finish above par. Underhood largely correct.

As this car was not a fresh restoration, but one that was already five years old, I wouldn't have expected it to crack the $100k barrier, and it didn't. But the seller should still consider himself fortunate to have gotten back three-quarters of his restoration costs, while the buyer can be happy that he got such a discount on the restoration, and as we often say, "the car for free."

Car now offered at:

Seller's description:

1962 JAGUAR S1 E-TYPE OPEN TWO SEATER Convertible

Clear Title, Miles 23,000, Engine 3.8L 6 CYL., Transmission 4 Spd Manual, Exterior Color Red, Interior Red Leather, VIN # 876642

This 1962 Series 1 OTS 876642 is a very early example of the cars built that year, arriving at a New York port in February of 1962.

This beautiful OTS was restored approximately 18 years ago and went on display in the museum of the Malcolm Pray Achievement Center in Bedford, N.Y. Motorcars Incorporated purchased this E-Type in early summer 2022 and immediately inspected the vehicle to determine what would need refreshing. We replaced the hood envelope but much of the previous restoration work was still fresh. Well maintained, the rugs and console were in great shape and the top is in better condition than can what be bought today. New Bridgestone period-correct tires on new Dayton wheels with new knockoffs were fitted to the car. The complete drivetrain was restored as we verified numbers and operation. The car has all new rubber products and new fluids, and runs beautifully. Although it has the locations for side latch treatment, it is right after the changeover.

Paint and chrome on this car are concours-level quality. The combination of Carmine Red with the red interior is not listed as a special order but the combination is uncommon, making this totally matching numbers 3.8 OTS a rare sight.

Mechanically, the car has a proper, steel correct exhaust system, new porcelain-coated exhaust manifolds, fresh brake hoses and brake pads. The battery and belts are new, but the jack and knockoff hammer are original as are the 23K miles on the odometer. This car is a great mix of dependable fun with beautiful history!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
