This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a Series I flat-floor roadster that was reportedly purchased by the current owner in 1978 and subsequently refurbished. The car is finished in Opalescent Gunmetal over red leather and powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes a black soft top and boot, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke steel wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, triple windshield wipers, an aftermarket radio, and a heater. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf the owner with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, service records and, a clean California title in the current owner’s name.

The car is a Series I flat-floor example that features a continuous floorboard under each seat. It is said to have been refinished in Opalescent Gunmetal approximately 20 years ago and features a black soft top, a matching soft top boot, a louvered clamshell hood, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, a driver-side mirror, triple windshield wipers, and dual exhaust outlets. Imperfections in the finish are highlighted in the gallery below.

Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured via two-eared knock-off hubs and are mounted with 205/70 Pirelli P4 tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors.

The cabin was refreshed under current ownership and features bucket seats upholstered in red leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Sound deadening material has been applied to the floors, and interior appointments include textured aluminum dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, an aftermarket radio, and a heater.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and battery amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 51 miles, and approximately 200 miles are said to have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and is said to have been overhauled in 2018. Factory rated output was 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The cylinder head stamp reads R2943-9 and matches the number listed on the JDHT certificate below.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Moss four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential, both of which are said to have been overhauled in 2018.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory configuration and colors as well as serial numbers for the chassis, engine, body, and gearbox.

Chassis number 876402 and the current California title lists J62876402 as the VIN.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
