This particular example has welded hood louvers instead of ones that were integral to the hood, distinguishing this as an early production car. A matching numbers example, this car was comprehensively restored to high standards and is presented in black with black interior and top. The current and long-term owner is a seasoned Jaguar restoration veteran, and since completion, showed the car at The Quail, a Motorsport Gathering in Carmel Valley in 2014. Cosmetically, the car is excellent and is suitable to be shown. The body is straight and displays excellent fit and gaps. The quality of the paintwork itself is excellent as well. The chrome is equally nice as are the glass and lights. The car has correct Lucas tribar headlamps fitted. The wheels are chromed and wear white wall tires with the appropriate aspect ratio to give the car an evocative period appearance and correct stance. The top and boot are also fresh and show high caliber workmanship.

The interior was completely restored to the same high standards as the exterior with fresh leather and carpets. The correct materials, patterns, and treatments were used throughout, from the vinyl behind the seats to the aluminum console and dash trim that was present on early 3.8 liter E-Types. The dashboard was comprehensively restored as well, and all switches and instruments are in excellent condition. The steering wheel is freshly restored and sparkles.

The engine compartment is clean, detailed, and was correctly restored to high standards. The cylinder head has the correct gold finish, and the vulnerable finish on the exhaust manifolds is like new. The engine, accessories, and front subframe are all clean and freshly restored in appearance. The correct glass windscreen washer bottle is present (later ones were plastic). The cylinder head and block number stamps both match the chassis plate stamp. The trunk was also restored to high standards with excellent structure beneath the plywood trunk floor, and correct tan upholstery (E-Type roadster trunks were trimmed in tan regardless of interior color).

This is a superbly restored early production E-Type roadster that presents correctly but incorporates many subtle upgrades that enhance the usability and performance of the car without significantly detracting from the authentic appearance of its presentation. Additionally, as such an early production example, it includes many features unique to early production E-Types. Included with the sale is the jack, tool kit, matching spare wheel, and significant documentation supporting the restoration work performed.

Private Party Or Dealer: Private Party

This 1961 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive Series I roadster that was first delivered in Alberta, Canada, and it was acquired by the seller in 1998. The car was imported into the US in September 2005, and a subsequent eight-year refurbishment completed in 2014 included a repaint in black, reupholstering the seats in black leather, rebuilding the numbers-matching 3.8-liter inline-six, and installation of a five-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a removable body-color hardtop, a black soft top, a straight rear bulkhead, welded hood louvers, flat floors, chrome wire wheels with whitewall tires, triple SU carburetors, and four-wheel disc brakes. This Series I roadster is now offered by the seller in California with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, the removed factory four-speed manual transmission, a tool kit, a black top boot, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car was originally finished in bronze, and work during the refurbishment is said to include mounting the body on a rotisserie, media blasting, an application of epoxy coating on the tub, replacing the windshield and door glass, powder-coating the soft top bows, and refinishing the body in black with Glasurit paint. Additional work included replacement of the deck lid, adjusting body panels, and refinishing the chrome. Exterior details include a removable body-color hardtop, chrome bumpers and trim, glass headlight covers, welded hood louvers, and dual central exhaust outlets. The black soft top is stowed under a matching boot.

Chrome-finished 15″ Dayton wire wheels were installed during the refurbishment, and they are secured with two-eared knockoffs and mounted with 6.40-15 Firestone whitewall tires. Additional work included fitting Koni shocks and polyurethane bushings along with re-sleeving the wheel cylinders and the replacement of the wheel bearings, universal joints, and rear springs. The calipers were re-plated and the hardware was powder coated, and the brake pads, rotors, lines, and hoses were also replaced. The seller notes that brass sleeves were installed in the hydraulic cylinders, and the independent rear suspension was disassembled and refurbished.

The cockpit features low-back bucket seats that were re-trimmed in black leather, along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. During the refurbishment the seat frames were powder coated and the tracks were cadmium plated, and replacement textured aluminum trim was installed on the dashboard and center console. Additional equipment includes a replacement heater/defroster and Jaguar-branded rubber floor mats.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, and auxiliary gauges mounted in the center stack. The steering wheel, gauges, cluster lights, and wiring were refurbished during current ownership. The five-digit odometer shows 41k miles, though total mileage is unknown.

The rebuilt 3.8-liter inline-six is equipped with polished triple SU side-draft carburetors, and the seller states a tune-up and carburetor adjustment was performed in preparation for the sale. Work during the refurbishment is said to include disassembly and rebuilding the motor, with replacement of the following components:

    Pistons and rings

    Valves and guides

    Main bearings and camshaft bearings

    Oil pump

    Custom-ground camshaft

    Timing chain

    Ceramic-coated exhaust manifolds

    Stainless-steel exhaust system

    Coolant overflow tank

    Stainless-steel cooling and heater pipes

    Finned aluminum radiator

    Water pump and coolant hoses

    Gaskets and seals

    CoolCat six-blade fan

    PerTronix ignition components

    Gear-reduction starter

Wiring harnesses for the body, bonnet, and cluster

    Cheney clamps

Cylinder head stamping R3245-9 matches the engine number listed on the chassis plate and Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission that the seller states was installed during the refurbishment, and the clutch components were replaced. Additional work is said to include an overhaul of the fuel system with a replacement pump, a powder-coated and re-sealed fuel tank, and re-plated hardware. The floors were also replaced during the refurbishment, and the stainless-steel exhaust system that is depicted above was installed.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate is included in the sale and shows the factory colors, drivetrain numbers, and a build date of December 15th, 1961. The removed factory four-speed manual transmission and a tool kit is included in the sale.

This 1961 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive Series I roadster that was initially delivered in Alberta, Canada, was imported to the US in 2005, and underwent a multi-year restoration that was completed in 2014. It was purchased by Def Leppard guitarist, Vivian Campbell, on BaT in December 2021. Finished in black over black leather, the car is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six linked with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Features include a removable body-color hardtop, a black soft top, PerTronix electronic ignition, triple SU carburetors, a stainless steel exhaust system, Koni dampers, four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ Dayton wire-spoke wheels, a cabin heater, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This Series I roadster shows 42k miles and is offered on dealer consignment in New Hampshire with a spare four-speed manual transmission, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean Montana title.

The floors were replaced during the restoration. The low-back bucket seats are upholstered in black leather complemented by a color-coordinated dash pad, door panels, and carpets. Textured aluminum trim accents the center stack and center console, and additional appointments include a cabin heater, a height-adjustable rearview mirror, and crank windows. The five-digit odometer shows 42k miles, less than 1k of which were added under current ownership.

The 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt during the restoration and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Features include an aluminum radiator paired with a CoolCat six-blade fan in addition to PerTronix electronic ignition, triple SU carburetors, and a stainless steel dual exhaust system. Work in preparation for the sale consisted of changing the oil and replacing the coolant expansion tank and spark plugs.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
