This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a Series I flat-floor roadster that was purchased new by late television personality Dave Garroway. The car is said to have been subsequently kept as part of a private collection before being refurbished by the seller’s shop in 2019 and acquired by the current owner. It is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential and has been refinished in Opalescent Silver Gray over red leather. Additional equipment includes a black soft top, a removable hardtop, a soft top boot, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke steel wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, triple windshield wipers, a push-button radio, and a heater. This XKE Series I roadster is now offered in Portland, Connecticut on dealer consignment with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, the owner’s manual, service records, initial purchase documents, and transferable New York registration.
This Series I is a flat-floor example that features a continuous floorboard under each seat. Finished from the factory in Cream, the car was repainted Opalescent Silver Gray during the refurbishment in 2019. Additional exterior equipment includes a black soft top, a removable hardtop, a soft top boot, enclosed headlights, a louvered clamshell hood, triple windshield wipers, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-off hubs and are mounted with 185VR15 Michelin tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors.
The cabin features bucket seats that were reupholstered in red leather in 2019, along with color-coordinated door panels, carpets, and lap belts. Interior appointments include textured aluminum dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, a push-button radio, and a heater.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 35k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership.
The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Compression test results are viewable in the gallery.
The cylinder head stamp reads R2918-9 with a corresponding engine block stamping.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Moss four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates.
The original invoice lists a total price of $4,658 along with initial delivery to David Garroway.
