This car was mentioned in the Q & A section of the March '84 edition of Ejag magazine.

A partial quote from the writer "I have 3 nice Jaguars and one is a very early E-type. I would like to know just how early it really is. Here are the numbers from the ID plate. Car No. 875584; Engine No. R1831-9; Body No. R1530; Gearbox No. EB799JS. This is a 1962 original red roadster. It has the side hood locks, which I would like to replace. The floor is straight and the hood louvers are spot welded in.

Car has a buy it now price of $79,990 for 20 days. Complete VIN on this car is J62875584.

Sellers description:
Year: 1962
Make: Jaguar
Model: XKE
VIN: J62875584
Mileage: 48584
Engine: 6 Cylinder, 3.8 L
Exterior Color: Red
Interior Color: Black
Title: Clear

This Vehicle Is Located At Specialty Sales of Benicia.

This 1962 XKE Convertible is a series 1 model which has become the most valuable and desirable of the lot. Purchased by the current owner in 1976 this Jaguar has seen just two owners and is a fine example of an older restoration that still shows well today. Painted a deep red over a black and aluminum trimmed interior this E-Type has a very straight body with good chrome and a black soft top. Powered by a 3.8L inline six cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower through a 4 speed manual transmission this Jaguar will pull speeds up to 150mph. The owner of this 1962 XKE has upgraded the 4 speed gearbox with the likes of a 1964 sychromesh unit that came equipped on the 4.2L engines which has allowed for a syncro equipped first gear. He has also added the upgraded cooling fans from the larger 4.2L engine to eliminate any overheating issues these cars were known to have. Now you can sit in stop and go traffic without any concerns besides being late to your next appointment.

Suspect this auction is a scam, car still said to be in NYC, same photos as above. Classified ad asking $27,000 listed, says contact seller.

Spotted in August 2012 listed on Craigslist in Yuba and Houston for $19,000. Certainly a scam.

I bought this car in July 2012 from Gullwing in Astoria and have imported it to Canada for a full nut and bolt restoration. Both the 6/12/12 auction and 8/12/12 Craigslist listing were definitely scams. Car was accurately described in the original Specialty Sales description and is going to make a very nice restored all original car (except for gearbox updated to a 1964 4.2 full synchro). Note that although this is a very early car (Sept 1961) it was never a side bonnet latch car as described in the quote from Ejag posted by pauls.

Car listed on ebay again for £21K:

Comments on this please. Asked seller questions thru ebay and after auction was removed got a phone call. Scam? I saw the comment by TimM above that car is actually in Canada.

Emailed this guy on 15/02/2015 about this car, he says that I cannot view the car in Retford (where it is listed) as he has the car with him in Aberdeen where he is working. He will however let me pay by PayPal and deliver the car to me at his cost, and if I am not satisfied after 7 days he will allow me to return it (again at his cost) and give me a full refund.
Hmmm sounds tempting, shall I click "buy it now" or "report this item"??

Use common sense with ebay or craigslist. Any legitimate seller will encourage a buyer to view the car before the purchase. If for logistic reasons you can't see the car yourself there local people who will inspect it for you (for a fee). With the prices these cars are commanding today any potential buyer should check the cars condition and history before the purchase.

I have flushed out many of these scammers before, they will make any excuse not to let you view the car. (by the way, I clicked on "Report this item" after stringing him on for a bit, I've now got a mate asking him awkward questions too, just to waste his time).

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
