Hi, 875463 spent it's life in NYC, Nashville, and Kentucky. I acquired the car from the family of third owner- it was with this family since 1963.

The car has a driver's seat modification purportedly done at the factory to allow the seat to move back a little further.

I acquired the car in 2015. After driving it for a six months, it went to a local expert who has completed a comprehensive re-commissioning including full engine and transmission re-build, new wiring harness, new interior and top, etc.

The selling family has been friends of my family since the mid 1980's, The story with the car is that the family acquired the car in 1963 when it was won in a poker game at University of Kentucky frat party. That original owner's wife sold me the car. She had many stories to tell about the car- all of which have proven to be true.

One intriguing story she told me that remains unverified is that the car was originally delivered to NYC in 1962 after being ordered by a female members of the Royal Family. The car was gifted to the Royal's hairdresser, per the story. Supporting the idea that the car was originally celebrity owned is that no selling dealer is listed, and the cars were extremely difficult to obtain for mere mortals during that time frame.

If anyone has any more info on this chassis please share. Especially anything on whether a (female) member of the Royal Family with ties to NYC in the early 1960's may have been photographed around an early Series I OTS LHD....

Yes, a wild story. However, the car was sold to me by the family that owned it since 1963. The wife of the deceased long term owner told me the history of the car. She said the Royal connection was a known part of the car's early history when her husband acquired it in 1963. If anyone has any early history of the car or info on Royal Family owning Jags in early 1960's NYC please send along.

Private Party Or Dealer: Private Party

This 1961 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive Series I roadster with flat floors and welded bonnet louvers that was manufactured in September 1961. The seller states that the car resided with one family from 1963 until his purchase in 2015, and subsequent refurbishment work completed in 2019 was said to include a repaint in Carmen Red, an interior reupholstered in Biscuit leather, and a rebuild of the 3.8-liter inline-six that is paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a black convertible soft top, aluminum center console trim, tan lap belts, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes with inboard rear rotors. This XKE roadster is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a knock-off wheel tool and hammer, an Operating, Maintenance, and Service handbook, and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.

The body was refinished in its factory Carmen Red during the refurbishment work completed in 2019, at which time corrosion and previous body filler were reportedly addressed. The car is said to retain provisions for outside bonnet latches although it is fitted with inside bonnet latches. It is also fitted with welded bonnet louvers, flat floors, and a single bullet-style door mirror. The seller states that the windshield was replaced during the refurbishment along with the black convertible soft top and matching biscuit top boot. A chip is noted near the driver’s door mirror.

Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels are wrapped in 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is via four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors, and the four-wheel independent suspension utilizes torsion bars up front along with coil springs at the rear.

The interior was refurbished during the work completed in 2019 and features low-back bucket seats upholstered in Biscuit leather, matching carpets and door panels, and a black dash pad. According to the seller, a modified driver’s seat mount reportedly ordered for a tall first owner allows the seat to move farther rearward than stock, and additional equipment includes aluminum center trim along with tan lap belts and a Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette radio.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock. Auxiliary gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are mounted in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 45k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller since 2015. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six features triple SU side-draft carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower. The seller states that the engine was rebuilt under current ownership, and an aluminum radiator is fitted.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Moss four-speed manual transmission, and the factory-style dual exhaust system exits through twin tips below the rear license plate.

The included copy of the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers and shows a manufacture date of September 1, 1961.

Fernandina Beach Golf Club

1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster

Chassis no. 875463

Engine no. R1615-9

Lot 223

1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 'Flat Floor' Roadster

3 March 2022, 13:00 EST

Lot to be sold without reserve

US$130,000 - US$160,000

*Subject of a four-year restoration

*Delivered new to New York

*Rare and desirable flat floor, welded bonnet louver example

*Offered with Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and history file

According to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate issued for this stunning Series 1 E-Type, the car was delivered new to the U.S. market, being supplied through Jaguar Cars New York, to first owner Mrs. H. Panack. The new Jaguar was completed at the Browns Lane Jaguar Factory on September 1st , 1961, configured as a left hand drive Roadster; was finished in a Carmen Red over Biscuit upholstery, and fitted with a black soft top. Among the first examples built without external bonnet latches, many of the under-hood details seen on those cars were still present when this example was built.

The first owner is understood to have kept the car briefly and by 1963 it had found its way into the family in whose ownership it would remain for the next over half century. According to the oral history of the long-term family owners, the car was put up in a game of poker at a fraternity house game at the University of Kentucky. Shrewd card playing on behalf of the future patriarch of the family resulted in him winning the car from his frat brother. When the father passed away, the car was inherited by his son, who bequeathed it to his sister after he subsequently passed at a young age. The family reported that when the car was acquired, it had been made to accommodate a taller driver—something quite useful in a Flat Floor E-Type. The current owner acquired the car in 2015 having known about the car since the 1980s.

When the car was purchased, it had been sitting for about a decade, unused. A true driver that had been subject to a few repaints and various bodywork repairs, the car was largely complete although the engine's head was unstamped and the body tag and stamping on the hood on the car was one digit off of the factory records (chassis plate and Heritage Certificate both read 1521, the car shows 1520). The Jag was sent to E-Type specialist Greg Weldy to be torn down to bare metal and restored back to its former glory. Photos and records document the work completed over the course of the four-year restoration. Cosmetically, metalwork was repaired, the paint was redone in its original Carmen Red, and the interior was retrimmed in the original Biscuit color (although the trunk was well persevered and left original). Mechanically, the seller reports that then engine and transmission were rebuilt, new wheels and tires were fitted, while the necessary fixes to the brakes, suspension, and rest of the drivetrain were also undertaken. While a keen eye was kept towards keeping the car stock, an aluminum radiator was installed in the interest of improving the cooling system.

Since completion of the work in December of 2019, about 2000 miles have been driven, during which time additional fettling has been performed. The E-Type is very clean wherever you look, and it's evident that professionals performed the restoration. Accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust issued certificate and a history file, this first production-year E-Type features the smart aluminum covered center console and pointy seats.

Still intact with its matching numbers original engine block, this fine Roadster should prove to be an enjoyable entry to rallies such as the Copperstate 1000. These elegant first series examples of the legendary Jaguar E-Type are the purest of the model range, and will always retain the extra cache of being the most collectible of this timeless model.

My opinion car is a nice driver. would not bring 100 pts in Concours, (this is why low bids at past auctions)Too many things are not original, the Steering wheel is Not a fat wheel, the engine compartment, Brake bottles should not have covers, and the clutch reservoir has an aftermarket cap. The cover screen on the heater is not for a 61 the opening is much larger, and the Engine oil sump is wrong and should have smooth sides. Screws in headlight chrome should be slotted not Philips.(minor mistake ) The rear boot wood appears wrong. also looks like an aftermarket fuel pump was installed.. (Why didn't the restorer remove the fuel tank and properly restore the boot?)The paint and bodywork is however exceptional Nice.(however, if the car was completely stripped to bare metal why did the restorer leave that ugly undercoating underneath the car? Chrome as well. Would have been nice to see the orig tool kit in the pixs .as well as the orig. .shelly jack and handle.
