875023 was advertised in the March 1983 Hemmings Motor News with a Virginia address. A rumor in 1990 indicated it's owner had another very early LHD roadster.

This 1961 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was completed on April 18, 1961, and is #23 of 385 left-hand-drive roadsters built before Jaguar revised the model later in the year. It is said to have spent time in storage in Washington before being acquired by the selling dealer in 2020. The car is finished in yellow over black leather upholstery, and it retains a 3.8-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission. Features include a black soft top, a color-matched hardtop, welded hood louvers, exterior bonnet latches, and an AM/FM/cassette radio. The car is said to run on an external fuel source, and mechanical sorting is needed prior to use. This XKE is now offered as part of DriverSource’s Spring Motoring Collection with a tool kit, a bonnet key, a Jaguar Production Record Trace Certificate, and a clean Texas title listing it as a 1962 model.

Delivered from the factory in Carmen Red, the car received a repaint in its current Primrose Yellow under previous ownership. Features include split chrome bumpers, welded hood louvers, exterior bonnet latches, and glass headlight covers. Glass etchings on the windshield, door glass, and headlight covers can be seen in the gallery, along with photos of the car in as-found condition.

Chrome 15″ wire wheels with two-eared spinners are mounted with Cooper Lifeliner 365 radial whitewall tires. A matching spare wheel is stored under the trunk floor along with a tool kit and case. The black soft top features a plastic rear window.

The cabin features low-back seats trimmed in black leather upholstery with matching door panels, sills, sides of the console, and carpets. The textured aluminum center console trim extends to the switchgear panel on the dashboard. Features include a flat dash top as well as an AM/FM/cassette radio that was installed under previous ownership.

The three-spoke steering wheel features exposed aluminum on the inner rim and frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock. The five-digit odometer shows under 200 miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU HD8 carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower. The engine is said to run on an external fuel source, although additional sorting is required prior to use.

The engine block stamping matches the engine number listed on the chassis plate and Jaguar Production Record Trace Certificate, while a replacement cylinder head was installed under previous ownership. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Moss four-speed manual gearbox. The selling dealer notes that the rear sections of the floor have been patched.

I have just completed the concours restoration of the car 1 body number apart from this car - I have an extensive technical presentation illustrating the important unique features of the car, many previously undocumented.

I'd be pleased to share this with the new owner as I think it would be invaluable during this cars' restoration. Please get in touch.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
