We might be just starting on 2021 but there’s no doubt which classic will have the largest number of column inches devoted to it this year – Jaguar’s E-Type which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2021. It was a ground-breaking car in so many ways when it was launched – a road going version of the successful D-Type racing car.

Not only did it offer 150mph performance but it has one of the most wonderful shapes of any car of any era – it was a design classic the moment it first saw the light of day – and in Series 1 form like the car we have here it offers a perfect purity of line. It’s a superb 1960s supercar and will no doubt be revered as one of the 20th century’s design classic for many years to come.

The example we have here today dates from 1964 and is offered in the classic colour combination of Signal Red paintwork with a black leather interior. It’s been with its current owner for just over four years and during that time it’s been treated to a repaint and a mechanical makeover ensuring that it’s ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. The Series 1 3.8 Roadster is the ultimate incarnation of the E-Type and this example is one that shouldn’t be missed.

This right-hand drive open two-seater E-Type was manufactured on 4 March 1964 and was first registered on 1 May 1964 by H R Owen in South Kensington, its lucky owner being C D C Lang. However, it looked rather different to how it presents today with its original colour scheme being Opalescent Dark Blue over a grey interior with a blue hood. This information comes from the Jaguar Heritage Trust but quite when it was repainted in its current Signal Red hue is unknown.

Sadly, much of the E-Type’s history is also a mystery until it was purchased by its current owner at RM Auction’s Duemila Ruote sale in 2016, the E-Type coming with virtually no history – a fate that befell many cars that were offered during that sale.

The E-Type has been repainted in Signal Red with a black leather interior which is the colour combination in which it was sold by RM Auctions.

THE PAPERWORK

As highlighted above much of this E-Type’s history is no longer with the car but accompanying the sale will be various invoices relating to work that has been carried out since the current owner took possession of the car. This includes invoices for various service related items along with a replacement distributor, coil, alternator, brake servo and master cylinder. In addition there are workshop notes as to various works that have been carried out to the E-Type to ensure it’s in fine fettle for its next owner.

There is a V5C in the owner’s name along with the Jaguar Heritage Certificate highlighting the car’s build date and original specification. The E-Type is both MoT and VED exempt.

THE INTERIOR

While later models received plusher seats this example retains its original style bucket seats trimmed in black leather. They look great and their leather is supple with just a small amount of marking to the beading on the driver’s side seat. The black leather on the centre console is in similarly good condition as are the surfaces covering the sills while the black carpets are also in fine fettle.

The door trim panels fit well and are in good condition as is the door furniture and there’s just a small mark on the trailing edge of the driver’s interior door trim panel. A three-spoke wooden-rimmed steering wheel is fitted which is in good condition and all the instrumentation appears to be original with a nice period patina to them. The bank of toggle switches on the dash have a superb period feel to them with the heater controls in similarly good order.

Despite no longer retaining its original colour combination the current set up offers a desirable classic look and the black interior compliments the Signal Red paint perfectly. It’s been maintained to an excellent standard, presenting with just the right combination of new materials and original patination.

THE EXTERIOR

The E-type looks resplendent under the showroom lights in its Signal Red paint and it presents with a deep shine and lustre to the bodywork. The E-Type looks to have been painted to a very high standard and finding any serious flaws in the paint could take a long time – even the underside of the bonnet looks immaculate.

The car’s exterior chrome work also looks to be in fine fettle although there is a small amount of pitting on the front over-riders but they don’t detract from the overall look of the car. Elsewhere the rest of the chrome looks to be in good order with just enough patina to show that they look to be the original items. All the light lenses are in good order, too.

The period correct centre-lock wire wheels look to be in fine condition and are shod with Michelin XVS tyres. The black soft top looks to be in good order and its plastic rear screen is in good condition, too. A Signal Red factory hardtop that is in excellent condition also accompanies the car.

THE MECHANICS

The E-Type’s indicated mileage is 14,958 but there’s no way of knowing if that’s the correct figure, but the E-Type has only covered a handful of miles since it was treated to an engine rebuild by a local Essex specialist in Jaguar engines. It’s also recently benefitted from the fitment of some uprated cooling fans and new hoses along with a thorough service and adjustment of the carburettors.

A myriad of minor repairs and adjustments have been carried out in the last 18 months including a new alternator, distributor and coil. The Jaguar is fitted with a four-speed manual gearbox and while we weren’t able to hear the car running or to take it for a road test it’s said to be in mechanically good order.

THE APPEAL

There’s no doubt that the Jaguar E-Type will be the talk of the classic car world this year as it celebrates its 60th birthday and what finer way to enjoy the celebrations than behind the wheel of this excellent Series 1 Roadster? It’s the most desirable version of the E-Type and retains a purity of line and purpose that is missing from some of the later cars.

In a way it offers the perfect combination of being recently restored but not being so perfect that you would be afraid to use it. The body is certainly in glorious condition but there’s just enough patina to the interior to show the car’s age which prevents it from feeling like an over-restored model. With plenty of recent mechanical work it should be a perfect companion for top-down summer fun.
