Auction notes - This 1961 Series 1 Jaguar E-Type roadster is believed to have been one of the earliest imported into Australia. Distributor Bysons took deliver just over a month after its 19 September manufacture, and our vendor is thought to be the car’s second owner, having purchased it in 1971! Ex-factory the E-Type was delivered in Pearl Grey with a Suede Green interior, and a French Grey soft top roof. That it is now painted bright red with a beige interior and black roof tells its own story and goes to the many facets of life these now-classic cars endure over 60 years of life. There is no getting around this early E-Type is tired, and ripe for a full refurbishment. The paintwork is aged, with paint defects in most panels and a small dent in the left-hand rear quarter, while inside the beige leather has an air of patina about it, there’s marks on the driver’s seat and a small hole in the panel behind the seats. The radio is also missing from the dashboard, as is the carpet from the driver’s footwell and behind the seats, while four-point harnesses are fitted rather than conventional seatbelts. It also wears a non-factory aftermarket wood rim steering wheel. Significantly, under the enormous forward-tilt bonnet the Jaguar no longer has its original engine and is in need of a tidy-up, with some surface rust to the top of the engine and exhaust manifolds. On a more positive note, the chrome wires look to be in decent shape, as does the black soft top, and this E-Type roadster comes with a rare factory hardtop which is complete but needs new paint and a rear window seal. A new battery and isolator switch has also just been fitted while supporting its provenance there’s a Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirming its origins and Australian delivery. There is also an original hard-cover Jaguar Workshop Manual for the car, complete with some hand-made tuning notes. Of course, any E-Type is worth big dollars these days, especially early Series 1 roadsters such as this, so an equally expensive restoration would logically be in this car’s future. Previously on full Victorian registration, the 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 is being offered for sale here unregistered.

I have documentation for this car showing it was registered in UK as a personal import from Hong Kong in 1963 and stayed in England until at least the late 60s. I would guess that this was when the 3.8 engine was changed to one from an S-Type and a 7B prefix number. The good news for any prospective buyers out there is I have the original engine R1717-9 for this car!

Auction listed starting price as $160,000 which was below the reserve. NO bids received. Passed in.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
