Perhaps this is the car owned by Ean Walker of the Waverley Bar in Edinburgh in the late 1960s and registered EAN111. That car was wrecked in 1969 and ended up in Sonny Swinton's yard in Loanhead. I thought that car was 850038 but that appears not to be the case (see my comments against that number).

Does anyone have more info? What do the factory records say?

I have had this car since 1973. It is now under restoration, should be complete by mid 2020.

I am now almost certain that Ean Walker's car was 850037

'Outside Bonnet Lock' cars are often regarded as the Holy Grail of E-Types

Originally assigned to the Jaguar Experimental Department, this is an extremely interesting and very early car

Finished in its original shade of Opalescent Dark Blue with a red hide interior and black hood

Forming part of The Devon Collection, this particular 'OBL' Jaguar has been in its present ownership for almost 45 years and is only now available now due to a change of direction by its long-term custodian

Totally matching numbers, this stunning example has been fully restored to a very high standard with no stone left unturned. All the unique ‘EBL’ references remain in place with others, such as the radio ariel deployment, believed to have been fitted by the Experimental Department

Assigned the appropriate registration number 'ENO 39' eluding to it being Chassis No 39

Complete with a substantial quantity of paperwork and photographs documenting the extensive rebuild along side its Heritage Certificate, handbooks and other items of interest.

Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to satisfy yourself with regards to the stunning restoration and detail that has gone into bringing 850039 back to life

Jaguar E-Type 3.8 'Outside Bonnet Lock' Roadster, Chassis No 39 is one of the earliest E-Types produced and has been in long term ownership, in fact some 45 years, dry-stored until the opportunity arose to breathe new life into one of the most desirable Jaguars produced. Every component has received the attention of those craftsmen involved with the rebirth of ‘ENO 39’ and your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to see the fruits of their labours. Resplendent in its original shade of Opalescent Dark Blue with its Blood Red Hide, this imposing big cat has all the early-production build details that set these 'outside bonnet lock' cars aside from the later more mainstream production cars with a large amount of individual components in place that provide the individuality that they have become well known for. The fit and finish is outstanding throughout and the car is restoration fresh with only settling in miles covered, so a period of running in is suggested to achieve the best from this beautifully rebuilt Jaguar. A rare opportunity to acquire what must surely be the 'Holy Grail' of E-Types and one that has been restored to within an inch of its life.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
