Seen on eBay, 5/2003. Ad reads:

"Fresh out of storage, the last owner gave up driving the car 14 years ago and stored it in a heated garage. The car started easly after cleaning the carbs and fuel pump, we also replaced plugs and points, changed oil, (no gas in the oil), removed the gas tank and ran an outside gas source. It starts and runs with no trouble, very nice running engine, no smoke. the gas tank is being repaired. The car has no structural rust and only a few small areas of rust (some mere pinholes), all the panels are original. Wire wheels, in very nice shape, air conditioning (not working) and 4 speed, this is one of the last 6 cylider cars built. We ran through the gears on the lift and they all shift fine, no noise or syncro problems. A few dings on the body and a large dent on one rocker panel, but no holes. Very solid, perfect for restoration but this car could be on the road with very little effort, and I am getting the slave cylinder. As for the clutch, the car might have a working clutch by the time the auction ends and I will post results, the brakes need to be done all around. Nice top, nice interior with no rips in the seats. Very clean dash, needs paint. Please ask any questions and come look if you must. "

The person who is putting this car up for auction has a COMPLETELY different idea of what "small areas of rust" means than I do from looking at the pictures.

Sellers comment:
This is a very original, unrestored, unaltered 71 Series 2 convertible. Oddly enough, according to Phillip Porter's book "Original Jaguar E-Type", it is one of 19 Series 2 convertibles built in 1971. It had not been driven since 1989 when I aquired it in May of this year. The pictures describe the car very well. The car is very rust free with exception of one place on the left rear quarter below the bumper, and the battery tray. The car has at least 85% of the original paint which means that there is nothing to hide. The trunk, floors, mounting points of frame, sills, ect. are very rust free. Very solid car to either drive as is or refresh with cosmetics and minimal mechanical work due to low milage. I have been in contact with the owner of 30+ years who is now 78 years old and was told that the milage is correct with no tales of broken speedo cable ect.

Vehicle Condition
Very original. Car runs and drives as it has 43k miles. Very quiet and tight drivetrain. This car had not been driven from 1989 until October of this year. After purchasing the car, I put on a new brake master cylinder. It also has a new clutch slave cylinder. The brake servo and cylinder I sent off for resleveing/rebuilding by Partco Automotive. The front calipers were rebuilt using new pistons and seals. The clutch master cylinder was rebuilt. I installed a new otter switch that controls the fans. The cars starts and runs well. Everything works on this car except the A/C, horn, and clock. However the A/C compressor can be turned by hand.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
