Sellers description:
We purchased this 1971 Jaguar XKE in July 0f 2001 and have completely enjoyed it ever since.
We are selling simply because we have another classic car and lack the storage space to store both vehicles inside in the future. This car has been garaged every day we have owned it and I suspect it always has been.
The appearance of this XKE is striking in every way. The paint, chrome, glass and rubber on this vehicle are in extraordinary condition. We have posted a large number of photos that will allow you to draw your own conclusions, but we’re confident that you’ll agree. Several small flaws are clearly noted, but they are relatively minor.
The tires are excellent. We had the wheels stripped to bare metal, repainted and the hubcaps re-chromed.
The leather seats, dash and other interior coverings are original and in very good condition. Several small tears are shown in our photos. These could be easily restored.
PERFORMANCE
We typically drive this XKE at least once every week in the summer and on clear, dry days over the winter to keep the fluids moving and the systems in good operating order.
When we have turned the key the Jag has never failed to snap to life. The original specs indicated that top speed was in excess of 150 MPH. I have never even approached that number, but it seems that at 70 it is just beginning to reach its stride.
Shortly after we purchased the car from a dealer in Pittsburgh, PA we had the four carbs rebuilt. It is now probably due for another tune up as a 4-carb system requires some periodic adjustment. The gas tank was completely removed, stripped and coated with epoxy.
As with any 35-year old car there are several mechanical issues that we are aware of that we will also bring to your attention:
There is an intermittent coolant leak that sometimes drips on the exhaust manifold and vaporizes. However, we have added coolant only rarely. If it is from a gasket leak, the engine oil shows no signs of contamination that we can detect.
The tachometer has always run higher than it should. One technician report indicated that an after market electrical regulator may not be matched to this instrument. They felt it could be adjusted by placing a small potentiometer in line and trimming to the proper setting.
The starter has always been noisy. However, in five years it has not worsened and never failed to start.
There are occasionally small fluid drops on the floor after the car sits. That is not at all uncommon for a classic British sports car.
The air conditioner ran ice cold hen we last charged it several years ago. It has not been re-charged since, so we cannot verify its condition.
