Finished in Brown, the E Type looks great in such a subtle color. Unfortunately, the driver’s side of the hood in particular didn’t get the memo and appears to be green. We have no explanation for the change in color, though we’re certain the reason for it is fascinating. Up top, the clearcoat on the roof has heavily deteriorated and the paint may be next. Glass around the car is clean and free of cracks and chips. Chrome around the car is also in nice shape, showing no wrinkles or any major surface corrosion. The paint was not smoothly applied, and the body as whole has plenty of scuffs and chips. The driver’s door shows bubbling which has broken apart to also reveal the corrosion underneath. Corrosion is also visible on the body shell at the rear of the car beneath the taillights. The Jaguar wheels are relatively clean, though each wheel does have some surface corrosion to show. Tire tread looks to be decent at best, and we highly recommend a new set. Overall, this E Type certainly has its fair share of bumps and bruises, but this is certainly a fine starting point for a restoration job.

On the Inside

In similar fashion, the interior shows us some glaring issues, but also appears to be in solid shape. The front seats are heavily creased, but the leather hasn’t been damaged yet. Conversely, the headrests to both driver and passenger seats are creased and have created legitimate cracks in the leather. The rear bench appears to be in solid condition, although it does seem that the leather may have faded over the years. Similarly, the door panels are in nice shape, but they also seem to have faded somewhat. The black leather dash pad is cracked towards the passenger side as well. The dashboard, and all of its various gauges and switches have been nicely preserved and are potentially the most attractive part of this E Type’s interior. Unfortunately, the leather-wrapped steering wheel has seen much better days, and the material is deteriorating at the top and the bottom. Headliner shows no stains but is definitely sagging. The carpets could benefit greatly from a deep cleaning, but the driver’s floormat is having trouble fitting in its place. Overall, the interior is in solid condition, but plenty of areas inside will need attention before the car is ready to turn heads once more.

Underneath

Lifting the clamshell hood reveals the machine’s V12 heart. Please note that a battery is not present with the engine. The undercarriage of the vehicle is dirty. There is corrosion present underneath the car towards the front end, and it potentially has affected the floorboards quite severely. Other than that, the frame and floorboards show a layer of surface corrosion, and the exhaust shows minor discoloration.

History Highlights

This E Type’s travels are somewhat of a mystery to us, but we do know for certain that the seller acquired this car in May of 2013. On the day of this car’s photoshoot, our team was not able to start the car, but we were able to confirm that the engine does in fact, turn.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
