First registered as 'JMV 611K' on 22/12/1971, this notably early fixed head coupe - RHD chassis 69 - was sold in May 1976 to Mr R. H. Reeves of Grimsby for £2,750. Ronald Reeves owned the car for the next 18 years before giving it to his daughter in January 1994, by which point the mileage stood at 46,441. Caroline put the car in her garage and only ever drove it to the MOT station every year until 2000 when it was SORN’d. Following her father’s death in 2015 she sold it to the current owner who set about a restoration. Paul Whiting Autos, a Jaguar specialist began with a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, stripping and rejuvenating the rear axle assembly, brakes, brake lines and suspension. New fuel lines, filters and pump were installed as was a new exhaust system, high spec radiators and hoses not to mention new wire wheels, spinners and period look tyres. Next was a replacement Webasto sunroof fitted by a specialist in Kent. The car was then taken to Brian Wills in Devon. Renowned for preparing racing engines, Brian spent numerous hours flushing through the waterways, changing plugs, oil etc before carrying out a comprehensive top end overhaul and fitting new electronic ignition. With receipts for over £10,000 plus the same again in labour the car now drives beautifully. The interior is totally original and the patina of the blue leather seats is right for the period.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
