This 1974 Jaguar XKE Series III Roadster is a 4-speed manual example finished in British Racing Green over a Biscuit leather interior. Records show that it was built on September 14, 1973 and imported to the US through British Leyland later that year. It is believed to have been sold new at British Auto of Frederick, Maryland, who also resold the car in 1979 to the second owner, with whom it would remain until 1986. A third owner acquired it that year and is believed to have driven it regularly until 2001, at which point the original 5.3-liter V12 suffered from a skipped timing chain. The car was subsequently placed in longterm indoor storage, where it resided until being discovered by the seller in May 2018. This E-Type is now being offered at no reserve as a non-running project. The sale includes service records, the original owners manual, spares, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clear Virginia title.
The included documentation contains a receipt from 1980, indicating that the exterior was repainted in the original shade of British Racing Green at that time. The folding soft top was optioned in black from the factory. Between 2001 and 2018, the car sat in a modern attached garage with a concrete floor. Photos of the car covered in the previous owner's garage have been provided at the end of the gallery below.
When the seller acquired the car in May, it was on jack stands and partially disassembled.
The Biscuit leather interior is believed to retain original the original upholstery and carpet. Factory-installed air conditioning can be seen below the dash, and a newer head unit was installed at some point. The seating surfaces are generally worn, and a rip is visible on the center console.
18k miles are currently shown on the odometer, though the included service records show that the speedometer has been changed on two occasions.
The matching-numbers 5.3-liter V12 suffered a skipped timing chain sometime around 2001, and the seller's mechanic believes that this was the result of a worn guide or faulty tensioner. Additional details have been provided in the seller's video. The engine was reassembled for evaluation and exhibition purposes, primarily to find out what was missing. One replacement carburetor was subsequently sourced by the seller, who indicates that the next owner will need to obtain some hangers and hardware for the exhaust system. A 4-speed manual gearbox sends power to the independent rear end.
Stamping #14033LA confirms the engine as original according to the included Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.
Surface rust is present inside the spare tire well, and areas of rust are visible on the driver-side rocker, floor pan, and inner fender panel. Photos of floors and rockers have been provided in the gallery below.
A Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate is included, confirming the original colors, dates, and overall configuration.
Service records dating back to 1980 are included with the sale, as are the original owner's manual and a few spares.
