Seller Private
Auction Type Reserve
The owner of this 1970 Jaguar E-type 2+2 reports buying it five years ago from a seller who had kept it in storage for about 17 years. He says he started a reconditioning project and invested $20,000 in new parts and repairs. A major job was having the car “completely rewired,” which he says corrected several issues. The most recent work reported is a repaint in the original Pale Primrose (yellow) and carpet replacement in September 2022. Other new parts noted include the gas tank and complete fuel system, radiator, coolant lines and radiator fans/motors, dash cover, and “numerous others.” The seller says the car’s odometer was frozen when he bought it, and he estimates he has driven about 1,000 miles since. He indicates servicing needs for the transmission, suspension, and brakes and says he is selling to devote time to a different project.
POWERTRAIN
In the 1970 Jaguar E-type, the 4.2-liter XK DOHC inline-six used two single-throat Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was rated at 246 horsepower by the manufacturer when new. The seller relays that the engine is not original to the car, per the shop that rewired it. He says the manual choke is needed to start when the engine is cold and for a “couple of minutes” after it starts, and that it then settles to a 700-rpm idle with no smoke. He reports no engine leaks or weeps. The Borg-Warner Model 8 three-speed automatic transmission is not operating correctly. According to the seller, it will only start off in second gear and then shift to third between 15-30 mph. He reports a transmission fluid weep.
EXTERIOR
The 2+2 version of the Jaguar E-type rode on a 105-inch wheelbase, a 9-inch-stretch over the standard coupe, to fit small rear seats. The seller states that the car was painted in September 2022 and that the Pale Primrose finish is in “great shape” with no swirls. The glass and windows are “good,” with some minor scratches but no cracks indicated. The door and trunk seals were replaced in 2022 and there are no water leaks, he states. The seller indicates “small” areas of rust on some surface edges and underneath the hood, near the brake servo. The hood does not fit perfectly on the driver side, per the seller. He states that all lighting works as designed.
INTERIOR
The interior appears to be intact but a little tired. The seller says the Jaguar’s original black leather is in “good” shape with no cracks or tears. The headrests are missing, but the seat adjustments are said to "work properly." A new wool carpet kit was installed in September 2022. The headliner is reported to be in “good” condition, with a working dome light. A new dash cover is indicated, and the seller states that interior trim is intact. He affirms that the heat works and that the gauges were rewired and working. The radio was removed. Photos show exposed wiring beneath the glovebox. Window cranks and door latches are affirmed to work, but the seller is unsure of lock functionality.
CHASSIS
According to the seller, the vehicle needs suspension work, including new shocks and bushings. He says there are no visible leaks but that the car has a rough ride. The steel slotted wheels are believed original and show some pitting. The seller says he has a set of five wire-spoke Jaguar wheels he can sell with the car. The unassisted steering is affirmed to operate properly with a straight wheel and no play. The seller says the brakes seem to work well but says that his mechanic recommended brake servicing. The car has 195/65R15 Toyo Proxes tires, but these show 2003 DOT date codes and should be replaced.
DOCUMENTATION
The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Tennessee title in his name. He will include invoices for parts purchased and work completed. The seller has been working on reconditioning this 1970 Jaguar E-type 2+2 for the past five years. New wiring, paint, and carpeting are cited. The seller adds the A/C system was not repairable, so it was removed. The Jag is reported to run well but needs mechanical attention, as noted above, to bring it to prime condition.
