Car to be at auction 7/17
www.handh.co.uk/buy/1969-jaguar-e-type-42-22/14127

Auction description:
Date 26/07/2017
Location Imperial War Museum Duxford
Lot No 84
Make Jaguar
Model E-Type 4.2 2+2
Year 1969
Vehicle Registration KAR 66G
Chassis Number 1R35256
Engine Number 7R37294-9
CC 4235
Body Colour Regency Red
Trim Colour Beige
Estimate £100000 - 150000*

- One registered keeper from new and 1,733 recorded miles!

- Last taxed for road use forty years ago

- Treated to much recommissioning / restoration work by marque specialist Alan Collins of Maldon (2000-2009)

- Never fitted with a stereo (blanking plate, speaker grilles and aerial bung remain in situ)

- Retains its original 'matching numbers' engine and manual gearbox

- The lowest mileage E-Type in the world?

According to its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace Certificate, chassis 1R35256 was manufactured as a right-hand drive Series 2 4.2 litre 2+2 Coupe on 15th April 1969 and dispatched from the factory fifteen days later. Finished in Regency Red with Beige leather upholstery, the E-Type was supplied new via G. Blizzard Motors of Chorley Wood to the late Mr Ashcroft's company Wellfair Contractors. Road registered as 'KAR 66G' by Hertfordshire County Council on 9th May 1969, the Jaguar accompanied its owner as he moved to first Rainham and then Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

Despite last taxing the E-Type for road use in 1977, Mr Ashcroft commissioned marque specialist Alan Collins of Maldon to recommission / refurbish it some twenty-four years later. Understood to have been a deeply eccentric individual, Mr Ashcroft made such erratic stage payments that work on 'KAR 66G' was not completed until 2009. Passing its last MOT test on April 30th that year, the Jaguar has covered a mere five miles since then. Apparently, Mr Collins recalls his former customer switching from a full-blown rant to a request to service his everyday car almost within the same sentence and thus being as likely to threaten mischief as offer praise.

A handwritten summary on file suggests Mr Ashcroft spent £26,345.61 with Mr Collins (which included brand new wire wheels and tyres) before laying the car up once more. Jaguar made a scant 1,041 Series 2 4.2 litre 2+2 Coupes to right-hand drive specification out of which 'KAR 66G' must surely be the lowest mileage example? We have not encountered another E-Type of any Series that can lay claim to such a low odometer reading. Sadly, Mr Ashcroft's motives for buying 'KAR 66G' remain a mystery. Nor do we know why he specified manual transmission or never seemingly installed a stereo (the associated blanking plate and aerial rubber bung are still in situ).

This is almost certainly the only single registered keeper, 1,733 recorded mile E-Type that we will ever have the opportunity of offering for sale. An unrepeatable opportunity.

Car to return to auction 6/18

KAR 66G is a 1969 4.2 2+2 fixed head coupé that was supplied by Blizzard Motors, of Chorley Wood, to its first owner, Peter Ashcroft. Mr Ashcroft is no longer with us but is fondly remembered as being - how shall we put this? - "deeply individual" in character. Which goes some way, but not all the way, to explaining the ultra-low mileage of the car. In fact, the total mileage to date is 1,733 and that includes the drive to the MOT station when it was last tested!

Mr Ashcroft kept the car on the road - so to speak - until 1977 before storing it for the following 24 years. Then, in 2001, he gave the car to marque specialist Alan Collins, of Maldon, Surrey, to be refurbished. The car was not finished until 2009, not because of the extent of the work it required or because of the rate at which it was done, but because Mr Ashcroft indulged in that practice which all professional restorers find both inducing and endearing: Erratic Payments.

Despite having to deal with Mr Ashcroft, his mercurial temperament and his laissez faire approach to bills, Alan Collins did a fabulous job, as can seen in the photographs and in the flesh, with the car still looking great nine years (and five miles - five miles!) later.

The full extent of the work carried out on KAR 66G is not clear, but there is a hand-written summary which indicates that the final bill was over £26,000. The summary is on file, along with a Heritage Certificate authenticating the car, various bills, and the last MOT (2009).

Brigg, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

This Jaguar E-Type Series 2 4.2 2+2 is a particularly handsome example of the iconic classic coupe, which benefits from a comprehensive prior restoration.

Under the bonnet sits a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated straight-six, which drives the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

The odometer currently displays 1,736 miles, however this is not warranted.

Originally sold by G Blizzard Motors in Chorleywood and first registered in May 1969, the car has had just one private keeper from new.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This E-Type is finished in the handsome colour scheme of Regency Red over a beige leather-trimmed cabin, with a contrasting black dashboard and a charming wood-rimmed steering wheel.

It rides on the correct set of 15-inch polished wire wheels, featuring two-eared knockoff hub nuts and shod in newly fitted Pirelli P4000 tyres.

The vehicle will be accompanied by its Jaguar Heritage Trust production record certificate and V5.

CONDITION

There has been no known bodywork damage.

The resprayed Regency Red paintwork is in excellent condition, with only some slight bubbling on the boot lid and offside rear wing.

The exterior trim also presents well, though the rubber strip on the driver’s-side of the rear bumper is lifting and will need to be fixed back in place.

Inside, the beige leather-trimmed seats have some gentle creasing and a handsome patina, but there is no major wear.

Elsewhere in the cabin, the gauge lenses feature some general marks and blemishes, and the switches and trim items show similar signs of their age and use.

There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.

The car is now exempt from mandatory MOT testing due to its age, and its last test was conducted on 30 April 2009 at an indicated 1,728 miles, resulting in a clean, first-time pass.
