Private Party Or Dealer: Private Party

This 1970 Jaguar XKE is a Series II fixed-head coupe finished in cream over a red interior and is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels, chrome bumpers, four-wheel disc brakes, dual Stromberg carburetors, and an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo. The seller acquired the car in Ohio in early 2017, and service in late 2020 is said to have included replacement of the water pump, alternator, belts, hoses, engine mounts, and spark plugs. This E-Type is offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a tire-change tool kit, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The car was originally ordered in Cream, and the seller states that the body was refinished under previous ownership. The bumpers are said to have been rechromed and replacement bumper trim and window seals fitted. Features include a side-hinged rear hatch, dual exhaust outlets, pop-out rear quarter windows, bright-finished trim, and a driver-side mirror. The exterior shows wear that includes chipped paint, scratches, and bubbling on the bottoms of the doors.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 185/75 Cooper Trendsetter whitewall tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard rear rotors, and the car rides on four-wheel independent suspension.

The cabin is trimmed in red with a contrasting black dashboard and features air conditioning, three-point seatbelts, a clock, a locking glove compartment, and an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo with console-mounted speakers. The seller states that the air conditioning and the horn are both currently inoperative. Wear such as fading, splits, and creasing is noted throughout, as are worn-through areas on the footwell carpeting.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and centrally mounted auxiliary gauges measuring oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer indicates 41k miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 4.2-liter inline-six was factory rated to make 246 horsepower when equipped with dual Stromberg carburetors. Work carried out in late 2020 reportedly included replacing the engine mounts, water pump, alternator, belts, hoses, and spark plugs.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Corrosion is present on some underside surfaces.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers, and it shows a manufacture date of December 17, 1969 and initial dispatch to New York.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
