Ebay item 10/29/07
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-E-Type-1969-Jaguar-XKE-Coupe-Original-1-owner_W0Q ...
Opening bid $5,000 reserve not met, no bids yet, 6 days left in auction. 42k miles.

Sellers description:
1969 Jaguar XKE Coupe bought new from Casner Jaguar in El Paso, TX by the President of State National Bank. This is the 2 seater- not the 2+2. I found this Jag under a car cover in his carport in 1994. His ex-wife said he rarely drove it after buying a Ferrari 308GTS in 1978, but his grown kids drove it once in awhile. Which was a good thing because everything was in working condition except the brakes when I bought it. The tires were out of round from sitting so long and the right rear wire wheel had some rust from the lawn sprinkler spraying it, but I switched it for the wire spare. I saved one of the tires and the spare is the Michelin that was on the right rear. The son of the owner of Casner is a friend of mine and he knew all the history of this Jag. It was always serviced by Casner and was repainted once in the original color. I had to replace the tires because of their age and when the service man at Discount tire replaced the Michelins with Yokahamas (they need to be replaced now as they are 14 years old) he said the tubes were the original Dunlop latex rubber tubes. He didn't even replace them because they were still in good shape. All the wire wheels are in perfect shape except the spare which has light rust in one spot. All I did to the car to get it running was rebuild the carbs and while I was doing that I squirted some Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders and let it sit for a week and then rocked the car back and forth in gear to loosen everything up. It started right up- it always starts right up even after sitting for a couple months. It doesn't smoke; it doesn't burn oil and it runs right up to redline in any gear including 4th with no effort or funny noises. This car has the 3.54 rearend with positraction that was designed for the US market and the fully synchro 4 speed. Personally I would prefer the 3.07 or 3.31 which were the European rearends, but I don't think they were available in 1969 in the US. This car has the twin Stromberg carbs which drops the HP from 265 with the 3 SUs to 246, but like I said this car will run to 5,000 RPM in 4th very quickly so it really doesn't need any more HP. It has so much torque you can easily start off in 2nd gear. What would really benefit this car is a 5th gear. It has the 9 to 1 compression pistons which was the highest compression Jaguar made. Everything on this car is original including the Lucas fuses. I had the radiator rebuilt with a high output 5 row instead of the stock 3 row radiator, but you can't tell from looking at it- it looks stock and runs a lot cooler. And I replaced the water pump, which was making noises with a pump from XKs Unlimited, but I saved the original to have it rebuilt. I thought I would have to rebuild the master cylinder of the brakes, but one night when I was trying to bleed the brakes, I accidentally left one of the bleeder valves open. The next morning I had brake pressure so I did the same to all the others and the brakes are perfect. Evidently Jaguars have some sort of system where you can't force bleed them; they are gravity bled. I bought a new radio with CD to put in the car because it has the original Phillips SW/AM/FM with 1 speaker, but to put it in I would have had to cut a larger opening in the mounting housing and I didn't want to do that, so whoever gets this car can have the new radio and speakers. I have all the little bits and pieces like the covers for the rear hatch hinges and seat belt restraints, but they have dried out with the heat and will need to be worked with to get them to stay on. Like I said this car is totally original and while it is not perfect, it gets attention whenever and wherever I drive it which is usually just to the Country Club to play golf on Sunday. The original Navy Blue exterior is a beautiful color and in different light it changes color from blue to purple to black. I would repaint it the same color if I was going to keep the car. The interior is a light grey blue leather which complements the exterior. All of the interior is original including the carpets which are a little tattered. The seats are in very good condition with no tears only wear. I have kept them supple with liberal application of Lexol leather conditioner. OK What needs work: There is a loose wire in the ignition switch which sometimes runs the battery down if I'm not careful taking the key out. This also somehow shorts the tachometer so it gets jumpy on occasion. Probably just needs to be taken apart and cleaned. The windshield washer switch popped out when I was trying to make it work, but I saved all the parts, but maybe buying a new switch is easier than trying to repair it. The air conditioning louvers are loose from age and the heat in Texas. 2 of them are out, but I have them in my toolbox. The AC works great by the way and where I live in Juarez, Mexico I can still buy the old type freon so it should work even better altho I haven't tried it. All the rubber is dried out from the heat; the car needs an entire new rubber kit which XK's Unlimited is selling for $500 (down from $800 last time I checked). Because of the brittleness of the rubber the chrome trim ring on the back window has popped out and the trim strip at the top of the windshield has was also gone when I bought the car. All the glass is perfect by the way- no dings or scratches anywhere. This car has the rare rear window defogger in the hatch window. All the chrome is good; when I drove the car often I kept it shiny which was very easy since it is all in great shape. The underside of the car in the footwells has some dry rot I guess since we don't get rust down here, but there are some holes. This is the only place on the car where there are any signs of rust. The jack points on both sides of the car are perfect. The car also had some signs of grounding which I attribute to the speed bumps in Juarez. They have speed bumps everywhere in this city and I know the original owner spent time here since he was the Bank President. As a matter of fact that's one of the reasons I decided to sell the car; this is not a good home for it when you have to cross these speed bumps diagonally. I have only driven this car about 1000 miles in the 13 years I have owned it and a big chunk of that was a trip to Colorado. The other reason is I finally realized that I'm not a motorhead. It has taken me 3 old Brit motorcycles as well to realize this- I guess I'm a slow learner, but this car deserves someone who will take the time to restore her. She needs new paint job; this one is a least 25 years old and is cracking. A friend of mine who restores Corvettes wants to do it; Bruce Willis has 3 of his paint jobs, but I don't really want to get involved in another project (I still have the old Brit bikes to sort out). Also I have all the original manuals and even the original license plates as well as the plate holder for the front which is on a pivot hinge so you can tip the front end forward without bending the plate. I have many extras like new wiper arms, but after buying them I didn't want to change the authenticity of the car so I kept the old ones and changed the blades. This car really is original and would be a good candidate for either a total restoration or at least a new paint job and rubber kit. The thing about a restoration is it's no longer original. So if someone is looking for a good original XKE this is it. I can't think of anything else altho I'm sure I will as soon as I post this. The car is currently in Juarez, Mexico, but it is registered in Texas and has current tags but not inspection altho it should pass. I will deliver it to Santa Teresa, NM which is on the New Mexico border with El Paso, TX. I have a storage facility there. Forgot- sometimes I have problems with the tail lights. However it is easy to spot because the dash lights go out at the same time. Usually a hard knock on the dash panel takes care of it. It's probably a result of not being driven often enough. I have had no other electrical problems which I understand is pretty unusual for Lucas electrics. The side light markers don't light either.

Car was sold on ebay and now resides in Plymouth, Michigan. Made the 1,750 mile + trip in three days without one failure (alright, the windshield wipers did quit in the rain, but was substituted with rain-x). The interior is complete and all original. Older re-paint looks good from 20 feet. Hot, dry El Paso weather was great for the metal parts and chrome, but the rubber parts suffered (we put duct tape on the window seals to keep out the rain!). Plans include new tries, rubber seals, and a good cleaning. The car will be driven; hopefully across country a few times over the next several years. After some long hauls in a series 1, 3.8, FHC, I'm looking forward to AC! I think the people were right about the series 2 being more driver friendly, but there is still something special about the first one.

The Jag has now been apart for about eighteen months. The body has been re-painted dark blue as original. I have decided to change the interior to dark blue since the light blue color is no longer available and I didn't like it anyways. I had BAS leather covers put on the front seats. BAS door panels will be fitted. New carpet. The remainder of the interior trim I will re-dye to match. Got some great spray on dye that matches perfectly.

All the front suspension has been removed and refinished and re-bushed; all new ball joints, etc. The entire rear end was completely re-done. All new brakes; everything but the hard lines. Replaced the wheels with tubeless Daytons. A stainless exhaust will be going on.

I bought a Driven Man five speed conversion and the after market air conditioning.

Lots to do......................

After almost two years, it's nice to have the car back on the road. With the weather here in March still iffy, the days have to be carefully picked, but I have been able to rack up almost 200 miles this week. Only problem was a leaking core plug in the head that was installed to block one of the coolent passages not needed with the 3.8 triple carb set up. Had to remove a carb, manifold, and some other items to get at it. All back together in half a day. No more leaks! The dark blue interior looks much better than the original light blue which appeared more gray than blue. The five speed is great on the highway. Rev's stay way down. Haven't tried the new AC yet; too cold and I think I need more R134A. New brakes work wonderfully. I don't know why anyone would do more than the S2 brakes. Now that everything has been replaced/rebuilt the stock brakes are super.
