A car matching 1R26833 was advertised on Carsales.com .au on 29 December 2019. That advertisement is accompanied by a photo which almost certainly shows 1R26833 on the picture frame (it’s a little indistinct).

Asking price AU$99,000. Owner’s description follows: “This example is a matching numbers car and comes with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate to confirm.  Recent triple carb rebuild, tune and service by Jaguar specialist.  Car is turn key and ready to enjoy.  Near new Pirelli Tyres on Stainless Steel rims.  New York delivered car, it’s LHD.  West Australian number plate ‘69 E’ included in the sale.  Best value FHC in Australia and in fabulous condition inside and out.  Car will not disappoint and drives flawlessly”.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
