This 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II coupe is a running and driving project that was sold new by Performance Cars in Ontario, Canada, and was acquired by the current owner in 1981. The car is finished in blue over black leather upholstery and is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 15″ wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, Smiths instrumentation, and an AM/FM push-button stereo. Work performed in 2017 is said to have involved fluid changes, and the selling dealer states that the car will require further servicing before use. This Series II XKE project is offered on dealer consignment in Canada with manufacturer’s literature, service records, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and Ontario registration in the current owner’s name.

Finished from the factory in Pale Primrose Yellow, the car was repainted blue during previous ownership. Exterior features chrome bumpers with overriders, a driver-side mirror, a right-rear fender-mounted antenna, and centrally-located dual exhaust outlets. The finish is faded, and additional blemishes include paint chips, scratches, dents, and areas of corrosion.

Chrome 15″ knock-off wire wheels show pitting in their finish and are mounted with 205/70 Dunlop SP40 tires. Stopping power is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with inboard-mounted rear rotors.

The cabin features bucket seats trimmed in black leather upholstery with a color-coordinated center console, dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include a heater, an analog clock, a locking glove compartment, pop-out rear quarter windows, and an AM/FM push-button stereo. Wear is visible on the seats and carpeting, and aftermarket speakers are mounted in the door panels.

The three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheels fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline, while auxiliary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows under 70k miles.

The 4.2-liter inline-six features dual overhead camshafts and is equipped with twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. The selling dealer notes oil leaks and states that the last service was an oil change in 2017.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Areas of corrosion are visible on the underbody.

The JHT certificate lists the original colors as well as chassis, body, engine, and gearbox numbers. Manufacturer’s literature and service records are included in the sale.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
