For Sale Silverstone auction, May 2015

www.silverstoneauctions.com/1970-jaguar-e-type-series-ii-fixedhead-coupe

Registration: DCH 631J

Chassis Number: 1R20807

Engine Number: 7R12174-9

Number of cylinders: 6

CC: 4235

Year of Manufacture: 1970

Estimate (£): 42,000 - 47,000

The history of this E-Type Series II FHC can be traced back to its first owner, a Mr Peter Williams, who purchased the car in June 1970 from a Jaguar Dealership in London for the sum of £1,250! He was to keep the car for the next 12 years until he offered it to his brother, Mr M. Williams, who duly accepted and took ownership of the car. Work commitments overseas meant that the new owner didn't get to drive his new purchase, and so 'DCH 631J' sat in his garage for 5 years without turning a wheel. Once permanently back in the UK, Mr M. Williams decided it was time to recommission the E-Type, and so had the sticking clutch remedied along with other necessary work to get the car back on the road. Unfortunately on his second trip out, the engine overheated and holed a piston, so a complete engine-out rebuild was deemed appropriate and this was duly carried out by marque specialist, Derek Bullimore, at the cost of around £6,000. At the same time Mr M. Williams thought it best to have other work done on the car, and a considerable amount of further restoration work was carried out over a period of 16 months in the early 90's.

The car was then sold through the E-Type Centre, Warwickshire, to its next owner, a Mr J. Garnder in May 2000, who owned the car until our vendor purchased it from him in 2013. An E-type enthusiast at heart (having previously owned a Series III Roadster for 15 years) our vendor has had the car professionally resprayed and fettled in his ownership, and it is now presented beautifully in green with a green leather interior. Since photography of the car, the vendor has also replaced the rear registration plate with a square style plate.

Supplied with a V5c, an MoT until October '15 and a thick history file containing paperwork from all & sundry in the Jaguar world with bills totalling over £39,000 over the years, 'DCH 631J' is worthy of serious consideration for any would-be E-type enthusiasts as a great 'turn-key' example ready to be enjoyed again.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
