Auction description:

1969 Jaguar E-Type Series 2 FHC

Colour Signal Red

Odometer 60,507 Miles

Engine size 4235

Town Lichfield

Seller Type Private

Location Staffordshire

Country United Kingdom

A matching number Series 2 E-Type with the last three owners within the same family

A really useable example in mechanically well-sorted condition

Stacks of interesting provenance providing paperwork is included

This E-Type was manufactured in December 1969

At this juncture the car was finished in light blue with a dark blue interior

The car was supplied to its first owner in March 1970 via Henlys of London

The car subsequently had only three owners between 1970 and 2008

A restoration was believed to have been undertaken at some point in the 1980’s

The current owner’s father bought the car in 2008

On the father’s sad passing the car’s ownership passed to his wife

The car then passed to the son, the current owner, on his mother’s passing

Consequently, the last three owners have been from the same family

It is only due to a planned emigration that this cherished car is coming to market

An extensive and well organised paperwork file is on hand

This includes the current V5 in the name of the owner

A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust factory record certificate is present

A photographic record of some of the earlier restoration work is included

There are many invoices included, detailing work undertaken over numerous owners

The Interior

The interior is finished in black leather

The seats are stitched, and box pleated for comfort and support

The centre panels are finished in perforated leather

The condition of the seats is excellent throughout

The door cards are finished in black and dissected with horizontal chrome trim

The quality, chromed door furniture is all present and correct

The black carpets are edge bound in leather and present in fine fettle

The dashboard is finished in black and is populated with banks of switches and gauges in signature E-Type fashion

The original Smiths white on black gauges are all in working condition and present very well

A contemporary JVC, 4 x 45-watt head unit is fitted but not currently connected

The three spoke alloy, wooden rimmed steering wheel is in excellent condition with the original, iconic E-Type boss

The headlining is a tightly fitted and unmarked condition

A webasto type fabric sunroof is fitted complete with fold up wind deflector

The luggage compartment is finished in black leather with rubber topped chrome protective strips fitted

Under the boot floor there is a full-sized wire spare wheel and accompanying tools

This is a period-correct interior in an excellent overall condition. A colour change to black has been undertaken at some point so likely to have been included in the 1980’s restoration.

The Exterior

The exterior is finished in deep and lustrous Signal Red

The exterior presentation is in a good general condition throughout

In some areas the paint and bodywork condition are commensurate with an older restoration

There is some paint bubbling and light corrosion visible in a number of areas

This is most evident around the wheel arches and isolated parts of the offside lower sill

The light lenses, front and back, appear original and in good overall shape

The cabin glass appears to be original and free from imperfection

The brightly chromed wire wheels are attached with “Jaguar” inscribed twin-eared spinners

The wheels are shod with 205/70-15 Yokohama tyres

These all appear to retain a decent depth of tread

The chrome of the bumpers and window surrounds is clear and shiny

This car may have undergone a respray back in the 1980’s but it still really pops with its Signal Red really suiting the muscular shape of the E-Type. There are some visible areas of paint bubbling and the odd chip and scratch in evidence but nothing unexpected for a 53-year-old British sports car.

The Mechanics

The paperwork supports the fact that the car has been diligently maintained

Significant maintenance has been undertaken by the last three family owners

This recently includes a new fuel tank and refurbishing of the carburettors

A new battery, fuel pump and battery inhibitor have also been recently fitted

The car starts, idles, and runs very well and is reported to be in good mechanical condition

The 4.2L engine replaced the original 3.8L unit and succeeded in improving refinement and drivability despite the headline power figures not changing. With the arrival of the 4.2 came an improved, all synchromesh gearbox which was praised for being significantly quieter and easier to use than its predecessor.

Since the car was acquired by the family in 2008, it has been maintained and repaired by an independent specialist who knows the car very well and has been instrumental in keeping the E-Type in such good, useable mechanical condition.

Car to be at auction 11/23

Mercedes Benz World, Brooklands,

November 25th 2023

1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II Fixedhead Coupé

Registration BJD 370H Chassis Number 1R20591 Engine Number 7R9711-8 Odometer reading 60,548 miles Estimate No Reserve

Desirable Series II fixedhead coupé model

Excellent chrome wire wheels

Matching number and offered without reserve!

This classic Signal Red example is supplied with a comprehensive history file detailing works going back many years. Most recently though, is a service earlier this year to include a partial carburettor strip down and rebuild. Before that in 2020, a new fuel tank with galvanised assembly, sender unit and gaskets were fitted including a clear-out of all fuel lines with all parts supplied from SNG Barratt. Back in 2010, both seats were removed, carpet taken out, floor checked for rust and treated. The carpet was then refitted including seat foam, carpet shelf and speaker housing unit. Whilst there is minor corrosion to the wheel arches, the condition of the paint is good and the chrome wire wheels are in excellent condition. There is detailed and photographic documentation, in 2009, of the rear subframe removal and strip down. It was then sandblasted with components powder-coated and reassembled with new brake pads and discs fitted, the calipers refurbished followed by reassembly. Supplied with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate and MoT test certificate valid until March 2024, this is a very usable matching numbers example and rare to find offered without reserve.

Car returns to auction 10/24

www.brightwells.com/timed-sale/5533/lot/744088

Auction description:

1969 Jaguar E-Type S2 FHC

Estimate: £42,000-45,000

Registration Number BJD370H

Engine Size 4235cc

Engine Number 7R9711-8

Chassis Number 1R20591

Gearbox Manual

Documents

V5C to follow, 6 old MOT's, Heritage Certificate, Photographs, Invoices. Tool Kit in Store.

Tax and MOT status Tax and MOT exempt

Lovely example on offer from long term family ownership; enhanced muscular stance with wider chrome wheels and tyres; useful Webasto sunroof and wind deflector

Dating from December 1969 this rather gorgeous Series 2 E-Type 4.2 Fixed Head Coupe is finished in Carmen Red and sits on a set of wider wire-wheels and wider rubber, which gives the car a more muscular, purposeful stance.

Under the bonnet, we find the typical 4.2 litre XK straight-six engine mated to four-speed manual transmission. The car looked to hold good oil pressure and ran sweetly as we moved it around for these images.

The Heritage Certificate on file shows the car was supplied new by Henlys Limited of London and finished in Light Blue with Dark Blue interior (HPI records a colour change from blue to red in 2004). We believe the car to be a matching numbers example.

The history file includes a selection of bills for works undertaken and parts purchased along with photographs of some recent works which totalled some £6,575 in April 2024, including metal repairs to the front and rear wheel arches.

More historic works documented on file include removal of the rear subframe in 2009 for refurbishment, new shocks/springs etc as shown in an array of photographs, a refurbishment of the carbs in December 2020 costing £610, a thorough clean of the fuel system in June 2020, a Webasto sunroof repair/refurbishment in 2010 and new brake calipers in 2006 to mention but a few bills.

The car has also been fitted with an alarm and modern radio/CD player and represents a most appealing proposition for a ‘turn-key’ E-Type 2-seat Fixed Head Coupe that benefits from significant recent spend and at least 1,000 miles covered by our vendor in the last 12 months.
