The Condition

Desirable FHC variant, renowned for its beautiful styling

British Racing Green paintwork in good overall condition

Some small chips, fine scratches and a few blisters

The bodywork appears very straight overall and the panels appear to align well

Lightly patinated homework and wire wheels

The sunroof fabric appears in good shape and the vendor demonstrates that it operates correctly

The tan leather upholstery presents beautifully with minimal wear

Slight marks to the floor of the luggage compartment

The door cards present well, as do the carpets and the headlining

Stunning wood-rimmed sports steering wheel

The instruments and switchgear appear in good shape

A slot has previously been cut for a radio to be fitted

Having undergone some bodywork restoration and a bare metal respray during the mid-1990s, this Jaguar has solid bones. The paintwork and trim have since accrued a light patina as befits a car of this vintage. All continues to present beautifully inside and we understand all the cabin electrics, instruments and controls to be in good order.

The Mechanics

4.2-litre XK straight-six with three SU carburettors

Four-speed manual gearbox

Well-presented engine compartment

Work completed in April 2024 included:

Cylinder head removal, inspection and replacement of head gasket

New thermostat

Exhaust studs, nuts and sundries

Fresh antifreeze

Replacement of various washers and fuel unions

New damper rod

New ignition switch

The Series 2 was the last E-Type to feature the brilliant XK DOHC straight-six. Make no mistake, the V12 fitted to its successor was a magnificent engine in its own right, but for those seeking the quintessential E-Type experience, the six-cylinder cars are the ones to go for. This car of course features the 4.2-litre version, which in European trim is fed by a trio of SU carburettors while power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The vendor informs us that the Jaguar drives very well following the recent work and we’re not informed of any apparent faults or untoward noises.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
