This British Racing Green 1966 E-type was manufactured on the 23rd March 1966 and was dispatched to Jaguar Cars, New York the following month. Imported back into the UK in February 1990, it underwent a partial restoration involving bodywork, engine, and interior retrimming. Further, it was professionally converted to Right Hand Drive in 1992.

According to the original Vehicle Registration Document (V5) the car was first registered in the UK in November 1990, with 2 keepers, until a Reverend gentleman bought it in October 1995 and brought it home with him to Northern Ireland.

Once over here, he immediately took it to the 'Specialist Car Division' of the Belfast Jaguar dealership, Charles Hurst Ltd, where it was serviced, and undersealed with Waxoyl. Subsequent to this it was never registered or used on the road. He put it in his garage, and only in 2002 did he have the car looked over mechanically with a view to selling it.

This resulted in some minor repairs being carried out where necessary, plus a new brake caliper assembly & a new alternator being fitted. However, it was another four years before he actually got around to marketing it.

In short, this E-type has spent the last eleven years in storage with the exception of a few sporadic spates of restoration.

***

The bodywork appears sound throughout, without any signs of rust on the bonnet, sills, doors, or spare wheel compartment (new door skins were fitted when the vehicle was completely repainted in 1994) - unfortunately, the radio aerial is missing from the front driver's side . The paintwork, while still looking good, bears a few chips here and there - just normal signs of its age. The car has chromed wire wheels, all in good condition, including the spare.

As can be seen in the photographs of the interior, the retrimmed seats, both back and front, are in excellent condition, though some minor peripheral bits of trim (e.g. door panel bottoms, some carpets) need to be tidied up. All the chromework is bright and without damage, and of course, the original wood-rimmed stering wheel is still in position.

***

Mechanically, the car seems fine and drives well. However, it has a small (not very noisy) leak to one of the flexible exhaust hoses; the brakes are a bit soft and obviously need bled, and I noticed an occasional lag in the automatic transmission gear-change on the short drive to have it looked over - doubtless a result of not having been driven much in the past eleven years.

***

The vehicle comes with sheaves of invoices dating from its importation in 1990 until 2002, as well as the Production Record Trace Certificate for the car issued by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

In all, while not being in concours condition, this E-type still has its original 1966 Series One specification - this was the first year of both the 2+2 and automatic transmission - and provides an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a classic icon with loads of potential.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
