Listed in the auction report as #1E56327 (that number is outside legitimate range).

Christie's auction, London, England, 2/22/1998 lot #357. Sports Car Market report reads:

"RHD, 4-speed, 4.2 litre, chrome wires. Good E-Type coupe driver with good new interior, decent paint and solid body that looks like it's had a good life."

    Auction description:
Sale 18213 - Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, 2 Jul 2010
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Chichester, Sussex
    Lot No: 359
    1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre 2+2 Coupé
    Registration no. HRU 575D
    Chassis no. 1E50327
    Engine no. 7E51834-9
    Estimate: £40,000 - 50,000

An early example of its type (the 2+2 chassis number sequence commenced at '1E50001') this right-hand drive E-Type 2+2 Coupé has the desirable manual transmission. The car was originally supplied to Mrs N Cotton, of Bournemouth, who sold it to a Colin Morrish, of Winchester in 1978. Its next owner, Charles Morrish (presumably a relative) purchased the car in 1984, keeping it until 1995. There were then two further owners in quick succession before 'HRU 575D' was purchased by the current vendor in 1998. In 2008 a restoration began at Jaguar Specialists Phoenix Car Restoration in Hereford, which commenced with a full strip down to the 'last nut and bolt'. Surface Processing Ltd chemically stripped off the old paint, after which new sills, floors, wings and bonnet were fitted. Steve Grimsley, National Champion of Champions Concours winner in 2008 and 2009, repainted the car and Trim Centre Direct, of Nuneaton re-trimmed the interior. The engine was rebuilt by Jaguar XK specialists VSE, of Llanbister, Powys. Approximately 500 miles have been covered since the car's completion in 2009. As one would expect, the quality of the rebuild is superb, with every last item correctly restored surely one of the best 2+2's currently available.
Finished in opalescent silver blue with blue leather interior, the car is offered with original service vouchers, handbook and parts list; sundry restoration invoices; a complete tool kit; current road fund licence; MoT to May 2011; Swansea V5 and a fabulous history file, close inspection of which is highly recommended.

Additional description from Christies auction in '98
Originally delivered to Bournemouth, this E-Type 2+2 coupe has had five recorded owners, three of whom were of one family.

With matching numbers throughout, the car has its original engine and appears to be in good mechanical condition. On a test drive it performed very well. The body appears to be sound and largely original, displaying correct panel fit. The interior has restored front seats and good original rear one. There is a manufacturer's tool kit.

With good provenance and early service record, plus support from strong one-make clubs, this Jaguar should provide many miles of enjoyable classic driving. It has a V5 and MoT to July.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
